Jesus it was only yesterday we were saying how much we liked going to the Tin Fish to get a fish taco and a brew and relax. But now it seems even this functional area is being taken over by marketing -- NBC to be exact:
Continue ReadingOne of the greatest joys of Comic-Con is the quest for food, as regular Beat readers know. From a filling lunch consisting of a handful of carrots to a hearty dinner of clawing at the last crumbs of chips at the Wired Cafe happy hour, Comic-Con is a food orgy for the hardworking folks at Stately Beat Manor. Luckily some people have a clearer idea of where to go to grab a bite. The folks at CCI haveput up an exhaustive list of restaurants, including many con specials where you need to just show your badge to get extra goodies or a discount. The locals love Comic-Con --it's official!
Continue ReadingNot since Star Trek waffles (I'm not kidding) has a movie had so many unconventional food tie-ins as Captain America: The First Avenger. Clearly this called for a review in the interest of science journalism. So while visiting my parents for the Fourth of July weekend, I decided an expedition into patriotic tie-in food was required and resolved to try and review it all, a project which revealed one vitally important fact - apparently Americans really, really like patriotic donuts.

Although considered drab by New York standards, the Rose Hill/Gramercy/Flatiron area surrounding the the Sixty-Ninth Regiment Armory, setting for MoCCA Fest, still offers a colorful array of authentic, delicious and affordable cuisine from around the world within a radius of only a couple of blocks. (It IS New York City, after all.) Bearing in mind the small budgets of most MoCCA attendees/indie cartoonists, we're going to highlight places where, for $10 or under, you can still get a decent meal -- some of them even prepared by Iron Chef level celebrities. At a few places, if $10 isn't enough for a meal it is still enough for some rare treat that will make your trip one to remember. For dinner you will want to grab some friends and a subway or cab and head to one of the great restaurants of the city, but your lunchtime is definitely covered right here.
Continue ReadingWith the Green Lantern movie underway for delivery in 2011, the emerald warrior is getting all kinds of promotions to make sure that by the time Ryan Reynolds has been on 100 junkets, everyone will know who Green Lantern is. And to that end, he's already being licensed out the wazoo. For instance, the Asbury Park Press tells us that Green Lantern is getting his own roller coaster at the Great Adventures in New Jersey. The ride -- 15 stories of 63 mph mayhem -- will open to coincide with the movie.

Looking to it as a guide for life, one can only look to Mickey Rourke , who plays the villain Whiplash, as a fashion icon , as shown on Vulture with a slideshow of his looks over the ages. And as for diet, Gwyneth Paltrow shows us the way to look like she does, with a diet of a tablespoon of chicken for lunch and a halved almond sliver between meals to quash the munchies before tucking in to a hearty dinner of a handful of kale. The diet regime is augmented by 4 hour runs through volcanic rock flats while being chased by a rhino.
