September was a fairly low-profile month for DC's comic-book business. In terms of new releases, there were the debut of the Freedom Fighters series, a Justice Society of America Special and a bunch of one-shots reviving the company's old war titles. Still, thanks to a handful of returning DC Universe and Vertigo books that had missed their release dates in August, average and overall periodical sales slightly recovered, as expected. WildStorm published a few one-shot specials tying in with the Red film and reviving Wetworks, of all things, with less than spectacular results.

When the news of the cancellation of the well-liked THOR: THE MIGHTY AVENGER hit, there was the usual wave of hand-wringing and everyone had their own theory as to what killed it, who, and why. Rather than just sit around and make up own own ideas, we decided to go to the source and asked a few prominent retailers three questions:

Marvel's STRANGE TALES anthology continues to be a lively, refreshing look at the Marvel U, as constant reinventions show just how versatile this universe really is. Below, a Luke Cage story by the great Toby Cypress and a Thing story written by the late, great Harvey Pekar with art by the great Ty Templeton. FUN!

Daniel Clowes is no stranger to the movies, with his GNs GHOST WORLD and ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL having been produced, and several screenplays under his belt. Now, it looks like his recent hit WILSON may be headed to the screen. Alexander Payne is set to direct with Josh Donen producing for Sam Raimi's Stars Road shingle.

While we were out and about in NYC's Soho the other night, we also snapped some pics of the Tokidoki store, bedecked with adorable images from their Marvel line of T-shirts, hoodies, hats, and skateboards. It's been out for a while, but that doesn't mean it's any less cute, especially that Silver Surfer.

We had a few moments to stop by a signing for 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking last night, and snapped a picture of author Paul Levitz, DC's Steve Korte, and Taschen Art Director Josh Baker. I have seen a lot of books about comics, but I have never seen a more beautiful one than this -- the reproductions are incredibly crisp and vibrant, and there are double page pull-outs, charts and even a chromium insert to mark the "modern age." With the text, Levitz proves that if knowing everything there is to know about a company's history qualifies you to run that company, he was the best qualified president in history.
