2015 MoCCA Festival announces first guests and move to a new venue

3
After years of awkwardness regarding temperature, comfort and general feng sui, MoCCA is leaving the Lexington Armory for a new venue in 2015. Mocca Fest's new home is Center 548, which based on the photos on its website, looks like an open, airy modernish venue more like The Puck Building, where MoCCA was born.

Are shifting demographics killing sales of veteran artists at cons?

33
Last week Denise Dorman, wife of veteran artist Dave Dorman, who is best known for his excellent painted covers, wrote a post on her blogm which is called Comic Book Wife. The post was titled: The Hidden TRUTH About Comic Book Convention Earnings: For Creators, Have Comic Book Conventions JUMPED THE SHARK? in which she pointed out that sales for her husband were off at several shows this year, and given the costs of exhibiting—hotels booths, food, travel—it made more sense to stay at home and do actual money making work.

Emerald City Con hotels now require a night’s deposit

4
I'm not sure if this is a brand new thing, but hotels for the increasingly ginormous Emerald City Comicon how require a night's deposit on booking. The main hotels are still pretty affordable—even the ultra swanky W Hotel where you get free Bliss facial cleanser and they change the rugs twice a day, is under $150 a night. But I guess given the popularity of the show and the early sell outs, some "hotel room jockeying" is taking place, necessitating a deposit to keep people from stockpiling hotels.

Tom Spurgeon has a partial, social-media assembled list of the winners of the 2014 Stumptown Awards which were apparently given out at the Rose City Comic Fest. The Stumptown Awards were formerly given out at the Stumptown Festival, which went south because of disorganization, and if anything speaks of disorganization and not-feelin'-it-any-more it's not announcing the winners of your award to the world by even the TUESDAY following your ceremony.

NY Mets rookies in female superhero cosplay hazing ritual

6
Where is Milo Manara when you need him? The regulation baseball season has seven days to go, which can't come soon enough for NY baseball fans, although the tearful Derek Jeter final sendoff still looms. In another fall ritual, baseball rookies were subjected to generally harmless "hazing."A few years ago this consisted of just wearing a My Little Pony backpack around the bullpen, but since that's practically normal now, the ritual has become much more complicated, as the NY Mets rookies were required to dress as female superheroes for the road trip from Atlanta to Washington.
