A TV series adaptation of Paper Girls, the comic series created by Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, and Matt Wilson, has been ordered to series by Amazon Studios. Deadline reports that Vaughan will serve as an executive producer for the series, which is being adapted from the original comics by Toy Story 4 co-writer Stephany Folsom. The series will be produced by Legendary Entertainment and Plan B.
Published by Image Comics, Paper Girls debuted in 2015. The series, initially set in 1988, follows a group of pre-teen paper girls who discover a strange artifact and encountering weird creatures while on their paper route. The discovery leads to the group getting caught up in a war being waged across time and space. The series is nearing its conclusion, with the final issue, Paper Girls #30, due in stores the last Wednesday of this month.
Paper Girls is the latest Brian K. Vaughan-created property to be translated for the screen. Two seasons of Marvel’s Runaways, based on a series co-created by Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona, have so far been released on Hulu, with a third season in the works. On the creator-owned front, the Vaughan and Pia Guerra-created Y The Last Man is in development as a TV series from FX, with a tentative release date some time in 2020 despite recently having changed showrunners. Vaughan has also served as a writer and producer for TV series such as Lost and Under the Dome.
The Paper Girls comic has been a wild ride from the very beginning, blending the feel of classic ’80s movies like The Goonies with completely mind-bending science fiction. I still remember reading the first issue knowing absolutely nothing about the series and being floored and immediately hooked by the last page reveal of the issue. Hopefully the Amazon series can capture that same feeling for viewers.
