Papercutz, the kids-friendly brainchild of Terry Nantier and Jim Salicrup, has announced 41 new titles for Fall 2016!

They have an interesting mix: original graphic novels, imports from overseas, classics from decades past, and the occasional licensed property.

So, what are the highlights?

Barbie StarlightBARBIE! Yes, you might have heard and seen that Ms. Roberts has undergone a corporate makeover. Well, it’s uncertain if Papercutz will offer variant editions, but they have three new series:

  1. Barbie (as she enters the workforce)
  2. Barbie Starlight (fashion meets space fantasy!)  Here’s the video for the Fall release:
    https://youtu.be/WhbM-gT7IEE
  3. Barbie Puppies (Barbie and her three (!) sisters (Chelsea, Stacie, Skipper) each raise a puppy!)

Hmm… I wonder whatever happened to that O’Connor lady who did the covers for Marvel’s Barbie comics?

What else? Jessica Abel. Bryan Talbot. Stan Lee. Trolls. Peyo drawing cat comics! (No, not Azrael!) Nickelodeon! Gallaher and Ellis! Smurfs! Nancy Drew! Hardy Boys! And, as a reprint from Italy: Mickey Mouse, literally (and literarily) goes to Hell dressed as Dante, accompanied with Goofy Virgil! (Man, I’d love to see someone redraw that story in Doré’s style!)

As always, Papercutz publishes a lot of great graphic novels for kids and teens! You can check out their upcoming Spring and Winter catalogs here! Click on the titles below for more detail, including sample pages!

192 pages
Full-color throughout
Hardcover
Humor / Form / Comic Strips & Cartoons
9781629911502, 162991150X

Contributor Bio: PIERRE CULLIFORD, born in Belgium in 1928, was the cartoonist known as Peyo. After leaving school in Brussels, he looked for a job and found two that caught his eye: dental assistant and illustrator. After arriving 15 minutes late for the dental assistant job, he was left with only one option! Peyo quickly found himself working with some of Belgium’s most talented cartoonists, including his lifelong writing partner Yvan Delporte. He eventually got the break he deserved when he started working for Le Journal de Spirou. Johan and Peewit were among his most popular characters. In 1958, The Smurfs made their first appearance and went on to become the world-famous characters we know and love today.
Summary: From comics master Peyo (The Smurfs, Benny Breakiron) comes Pussycat–a lovable, mischievous tuxedo cat who spends his time chasing after milk and snacks and framing other members of his family for his shenanigans. This cat isn’t exactly the noble hunting type– he’d rather play a game of kickball with the resident mouse than chase after him– and most of the humor originates from his clever, yet often foolish ways of trying to get what he wants (e.g. milk and snacks). Originally published in Spirou magazine in France, this is a delightful collection of comics that can be enjoyed by all-ages.

Series: The Smurfs Anthology
9781629911724, 1629911720

Summary: Another iconic Smurf, The Smurf Apprentice, gets the Anthology treatment! A Smurf wants to emulate Papa Smurf, and decides the best way to do so would be to practice magic. So, the Smurf sneaks into Gargamel’s lab and steals instructions for a magic potion. The Smurf foolishly drinks the potion and is turned into a monstrous lizard that all of the Smurfs fear. Can Papa Smurf create an antidote? Or will the Smurfs be seeing green for the rest of their lives? The Smurfs have delighted us all with their silliness, bravery, heroism, and heart for over 50 years, and now we finally have a definitive collection of Peyo’s original comics to see where it all began.

Contributor Bio: Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for young readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar. Another of Guibert’s recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter. Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.
Originating from Burgundy (as do the best snails), Marc Boutavant now lives and works in Paris. His work springs from a wry observation of life and the interaction of his friends and children. Their quirks of personality, mannerisms and reactions to situations are transposed into his characters.
Summary: Bouncer, Ariol’s rabbit classmate, is the best one at sports (even if he wears a dental device). That’s just one typical detail you’ll discover in the latest all-new collection of twelve delicately delightful Ariol stories. Ariol, that cute little blue donkey with the big eye glasses, whose best friend is a pig, who is hopelessly in love with a cow, while a fly is equally head-over-heels in love with him (not that he cares). Ariol’s ever-expanding universe features many endearing characters that will remind you of your friends and (possibly) your enemies too. After all, Ariol’s just a donkey like you and me.

  1. Happy to see the Smurfs Anthology #4 officially rescheduled, along with the Peyo’s Pussycat.

That Mickey’s Inferno story was published here in the States last in Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories #666, appropriately enough. That was probably more than a decade ago, so a reprint isn’t too soon, I guess.

Yay for more Dance Club, and those Tinkerbell comics are always beautifully drawn and colored.
