Revealed: The cover for the final Popeye volume
Fantagraphics has released the cover for Popeye Vol. 6, the final volume of their handsome reprint series of E.C. Segar's immortal Thimble Theater strips. We're eager to get this if only to finish selling out POPEYE on the back of the books. Great design, great strip—one of those "must haves" for every well-stocked comics library for sure.
Coming Attractions: February 2012: Part Three
Here it is, the stunning conclusion of new titles shipping in February!
Since this is Oscars weekend, I've included some award winners below! Hugo! Edgar! Carnegie! Stoker! Even Shamus! (No, not that one!)
Lots of adaptations! One is a comic based on a movie based on a prose novel!
Jason's I KILLED ADOLF HITLER optioned for a movie
We've never been able to hide our adoration of Jason's time travel tale I KILLED ADOLF HITLER, and we're far from alone in this regard. Fantagraphics has just announced that Studio Eight in association with Up Country Productions has optioned the film rights to the book.
Jamie and Alex Brown of Studio Eight have previously produced LAND OF THE BLIND and CAPTURED. They've tapped screenwriter D.C. Walker of Up Country Productions for the script.
Nice art: Jaime Hernandez's Return of the Ti-girls
Over at FLOG, they have released the back cover for Jaime Hernandez's God & Science: Return of the Ti-Girls, a collection of the story from the first two issues of LOVE AND ROCKETS: NEW STORIES VOLS. 1 AND 2.
While Jaime's story from volumes 3 and 4 "The Love Bunglers" has rightfully been held up as one of the greatest comics of all times, for a lighter course, this might be a suitable choice. We can't help but think that all of the people calling for great superhero stories featuring women will find Ti-Girls a masterpiece, as well, an entire superhero universe made up of nothing but superheroines of various shapes and sizes.
Fantagraphics 40% off sale will increase your bookshelves
Fantagraphics is having a four-day 40% off sale featuring some amazing books by Gilbert Hernandez, Robert Williams, Jules Feiffer, Carol Tyler, and more. You really can't go wrong with anything on the list, but here are a few of our own picks:
Kim Thompson on "The Graphic Novel Decade"
"I think a solid core of high-selling mainstream-y genre comics would be nice, but it really hasn't happened (except for arguably the manga phenomenon,...
PREVIEW: Walt Disney's Donald Duck: Lost in the Andes
This month's release of the first volume of Fantagraphics' Carl Barks reprints is call for rejoicing. There have been many reprint projects centered on Barks' work, but they must have been designed by the three bears: one was too expensive, one was too cheap, one had garish color, and so on. This new effort -- reprinted in handsome hardcovers with simple coloring by Rich Tommaso that recalls the original limited coloring without a lot of fanfare.
I think a lot is going to be said as more of Barks' work becomes available in a world where the bodies of work of the great cartoonists are becoming increasingly available -- it is the golden age of the comics reprint, after all. For now, this conversation between James Romberger and Gary Groth will serve as a good introduction.
Fantagraphics has a 17-page pdf preview available on their site. In the meantime, here's a seven-page preview of that preview. And these may be the seven of the greatest comics pages ever. Enjoy.
Coming Attractions: Fall 2011: Fantagraphics
Mark Twain and Flannery O'Connor! Estonia and the Andes! Armed Gardens and Treasure Island! Joe Kubert, Tony Millionaire, Jack Davis! Old Comedians and Young Romance! And Gahan Wilson's Nuts!
