Preview: Rat God #1 by Richard Corben brings the backwoods horror

0
This preview of the new Richard Corben book from Dark Horse came in my email yesterday to promote the FOC of the book—the last day that retailers can adjust orders. So I missed posting it when it would do any good (I was in meetings and on deadline yesterday). But perhaps consumers will be interested as well! Corben is a powerhouse of the first wave of self-publishing and "ground level" publishing in the 80s, and he's still rocking out with the art.

Novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) seems to be the headliner in the gala 200th issues of Dark Horse Presents. This groundbreaking anthology has introduced a ton of great comics to the world—a couple of little comics called Sin City and Concrete— and it was also the very first Dark Horse publication. To celebrate, the 200th issue has a stellar line up and a HELLBOY cover by Gabriel Bá, an APE-X variant cover by THE GOON creator Eric Powell and more including the US publication of a comic Flynn and Dave Gibbons originally commissioned for the Guardian in the UK.

Review: ‘Action Philosophers’ is required reading

7
The duo of Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey have done it again in the 10th anniversary edition of their comic book series Action Philosophers. It's available in late October from Dark Horse in a beautiful hardcover one volume edition with new cover art. This smart and witty non-fiction graphic book is the introduction to philosophy that should be required reading. I wish it had been around when I struggled through some of these works! The series originally published by Van Lente and Dunlavey under their company Evil Twin Comics began life as a single issue comic book about Frederick Niestche, he of the “God is Dead” philosophy. The comic book proved to be so popular that the guys developed a series that was eventually distributed by Diamond. For those of you unfamiliar with the industry that’s pretty impressive for an indie company. With support and appreciation from the industry the series won a Xeric Grant in 2004, was nominated twice for an Ignatz award and lauded by the American Library Association. For Evil Twin Comics they've also created Action Presidents and The Comic Book History of Comics.

First Look: Dark Horse Announces Ethan Young’s Nanjing: The Burning City

1
NANJING PG 002 Ethan Young is a cartoonist best known for his autobiographical webcomic Tails, but he's going to be coming out in a big way next August with NANJING: The Burning City, a full length historical comic to be published by Dark Horse. According to the publisher: After the bombs fell and shook the walls of Nanjing, the Imperial Japanese Army entered and seized the Chinese capital. Through the dust of the demolished buildings, screams echo off the rubble. Two abandoned Chinese soldiers are trapped and desperately outnumbered inside the walled city. What they’ll encounter will haunt them. But in the face of horror, they’ll learn that resistance and bravery cannot be destroyed by the enemy. Dark Horse provided a preview of the book, and it's in a rugged black and white style well suited to what sounds like a grim tale. Tails has a looser, more cartoony look, but this is a little Kubert, a little Tardi...
