Dark Horse has revealed Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight — Villains and Vignettes, a four-issue follow-up to last year’s spin-off anthology for Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, and Scott Hepburn‘s supervillain series, expanding on the world of Twilight City. The first issue will feature comics from Mark Waid & Scott Kolins, Oswalt, Blum & Mike Mignola, and Hepburn (this time in the writer’s chair) & Cary Nord, while the line-up for subsequent ones includes stories by J.M. DeMatteis & Kevin Maguire, Hannah Rose May & Justin Mason, and Dan Hernandez & Darick Robertson.
Blum comments, “This volume of Welcome to Twilight was an absolute dream come true, bringing together iconic creators who inspired the comics we write as well as some of the greatest up and coming talent who constantly make us jealous – all unleashing their twisted brains on the world of Minor Threats and populating new corners of our fantastic city. And I don’t use ‘dream’ lightly, I’m still not sure we actually got to write a story for Mike friggin’ Mignola. If this was a prank, no one tell me.”
The comic marks only the second by Waid for Dark Horse, following 2004’s BMW tie-in The Hire. He says, “I was flattered to be asked to participate, knowing what a murderers row of talent has already played in the Minor Threats sandbox. To be paired once more with Scott Kolins was an even bigger thrill. Our story is about the Alex Jones of the MT Universe — a sleazebag selling supplements that’ll give you powers — and a very dissatisfied customer and, boy, was it fun to write.” Kolins, who’s worked with Waid several previous times, adds, “This trashy story about trashy people was all sorts of trashy fun. Damn you, Waid. Really hope we get to do it again!”
Blum, Oswalt and Mignola’s story, meanwhile, will “reveal the tragic origins of the dead kaiju many citizens of Redport call home,” while Hepburn and Nord’s “travels back to Frankie Follis’s past to uncover the true moment Playtime was born.” Hannah Rose May and Justin Mason’s story is about Goldstein and King, and is titled “Supervillains at Law,” while DeMatteis and Maguire’s reunion is called “The Superlatives.”
DeMatteis says, “It’s been an absolute pleasure playing in the Minor Threats sandbox and adding to the amazing universe Jordan and Patton have created. The icing on the cake has been reuniting with one of my all-time favorite collaborators, the great Kevin Maguire, for the first time in more than a decade — and launching a new (almost/kinda/sorta) superhero team.” For more from the creators, head to Dark Horse’s website.
Issue #1 will be released with covers by Hepburn and Joe Quinones on October 28. In the meantime, the fifth and final issue of the last main Minor Threats series, Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive, will be released on July 29, and Blum, Tim Seeley, and Scott Koblish’s new series, The Big Shakedown, will begin on September 16.
