Jason Aaron’s run on Thor has been one of the definitive takes on the character in his decades-long history. It has been told through numerous volumes with a variety of artists, but it’s going to end where it all began. As reported by CBR, Aaron is rejoined by Thor: God of Thunder artist Esad Ribic for King Thor, a four-issue miniseries debuting in September. Check out the solicit below:
“SUPERSTARS JASON AARON & ESAD RIBIC CONCLUDE THEIR EPIC THOR STORY! The creators of the legendary THOR: GOD OF THUNDER series that kicked off one of the most epic runs in Marvel history are back together for one last ride with the almighty Lord of Asgard! Seven years ago, Jason and Esad introduced the Thor of the far future, All-Father of a broken realm and a dying universe, as he stood in battle against the Butcher of Gods, wielder of All-Black the Necrosword. Now that nefarious blade has returned, in the hands of Thor’s all-time greatest enemy – his brother, Loki – for one final, cataclysmic showdown. Behold the book no comics fan should miss – the celebration of the end of a truly Marvelous era.”
This announcement seems to be at odds with what Marvel has previously stated regarding the end of Aaron’s run, however. Thor #15, out this July, has been touted as the beginning of the end of Aaron’s run. Read the solicitation of that issue below:
“WAR OF THE REALMS EPILOGUE! NEW STATUS QUO FOR THE GOD OF THUNDER! To end the War of the Realms, Thor made a sacrifice that will leave him forever changed. Now he must face the choices he’s made. What lies ahead for the God of Thunder? Jason Aaron’s legendary run draws to a close – don’t miss the start of his final arc!”
Given that the current Thor title takes place in the present day unlike the future-set King Thor, it’s likely that the above solicitation refers to the end of Aaron’s present-day story for the character. King Thor last appeared in last year’s Thor #5 and #6. drawn by Christian Ward, featuring his battle with the ultimate entity of the universe, Doctor Doom. It looked like King Thor’s story was over, as Thor and Doom battled for centuries upon centuries underground while human society rebuilt itself. We’ll have to wait and see what Aaron and Ribic have in store for us.
