The indie-focused Ignatz Award nominees have just been announced. Chosen by a panel consisting of Lisa Hanawalt, Jason Shiga, Dustin Harbin, Damien Jay and Sakura Maku the list comprises an eclectic and incredible array of comics from the year past. Winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly on Saturday, September 14, 2012 at 9:30 PM during the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD.

While no one really dominated, the Beat’s pick for up and coming cartoonist Sam Alden got three nominations, including Promising New Talent. Lilli Carré and MichAel DeForge also had three nominations. I don’t like pigeonholing creators, but all five of the Outstanding Graphic Novel nominees are by people not named Ron. There isn’t a comic on this list I don’t love and recommend. IT IS THE BEST OF TIMES.

Winners are voted on by SPX attendees. The ceremony this year will be sponsored by comiXology’s self-publishing portal Submit.

Additional information on the nominees and previews (as available) can be found athttp://www.spxpo.com/ignatz-awards-2013.
