Z2 is teaming up with another legendary group of musicians for its next graphic novel: The Door’s Morrison Hotel. The announcement marks the fiftieth anniversary of the title album, originally released in 1970 and now, to be adapted by Leah Moore, daughter of Watchmen’s Alan Moore.
Morrison Hotel will be a collaboration between Moore and the surviving members of The Doors (Robby Krieger and John Densmore) with artists yet to be announced. At 144 pages, the anthology will focus on the band’s influence on counterculture and the time leading up to their rise to fame; the close of the free spirit of the 1960s and the 1970s, when fights for equality ignited with protests of the Vietnam War.
“Very few bands have had such lasting importance to American rock history as The Doors, and to be able work with them directly is unreal” says Z2 publisher, Josh Frankel. “To have been afforded the honor to add to the band’s enduring legacy with their first comic anthology further cements Z2’s status as the premier publisher of comics for music fans, and an honor we don’t take lightly.”
Morrison Hotel hits comic shops and bookstores on October 13. Preorders are up now on Z2’s website as well as The Doors’. Two formats will be available, per Z2 standard. The financially conscious can grab a copy for $19.99, while those with a few more bones can grab the deluxe edition for $99.99. The latter features a slipcase, three 9×14.5 prints featuring art from the book, a certificate of authenticity signed by Moore, and an exclusive 50th Anniversary Edition 12” picture disc of the complete Morrison Hotel album.
Damn, hard to believe it’s been that long. I had that album, of course, along with all of the records the group put out. Definitely this is a book I need to pick up.
