To celebrate Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27, DC Comics is turning September’s Detective Comics #1027 into a 144-page, star-studded anthology available at a price point of $9.99.
You can find the full press from the announcement below, but the thing to note here is that the lineup of creators is just stellar. It is as follows: Greg Rucka/Eduardo Risso, Grant Morrison/Chris Burnham, Tom King/Walt Simonson, James Tynion IV/Riley Rossmo, Peter J. Tomasi/Brad Walker, Dan Jurgens, Marv Wolfman/Emanuela Lupacchino and Bill Sienkiewicz, Brian Michael Bendis/David Marquez, Mariko Tamaki/Dan Mora, Scott Snyder/Ivan Reis, Kelly Sue DeConnick/John Romita Jr and Klaus Janson, and Matt Fraction/Chip Zdarsky.
For my money, the most intriguing pairing here is Morrison and Burnham, who didn’t even re-team for last year’s landmark Detective Comics #1000. Some other pairings of interest here are Bendis and Marquez — a well-tread Marvel team that is now doing their first work together at DC — as well as Fraction and Zdarsky, whose creator-owned book Sex Criminals remains one of the most interesting and idiosyncratic stories in any medium, even as it heads now toward its climax (sorry).

Detective Comics #1027 also includes “tribute” art from fan-favorite artists, including, José Luis García-López, Jamal Campbell, Lee Bermejo and Jorge Jiménez, among others. An extensive variant cover program is planned for this landmark issue, including a series of ten variants spotlighting both friends and foes of Batman, and an extensive program of retailer exclusive variant covers.
