Valiant has a smart approach to introducing new series into its expanding line-up. Whether it be through established on-going series or big scale events, new character series tend to lift off from #0 issues or one-shots that test the waters to see if they catch on (as was the case with War Mother). This is exactly how one of Valiant’s new April releases, Punk Mambo #1, written by Cullen Bunn with art by Adam Gorham, is coming about.

Punk Mambo is a British voodoo priestess that carries herself like a 20th century punk rock veteran, Mohawk and cigarettes included. There is an air of Constantine about her as she hopes to bring punk’s own brand of anarchy to the American South. She’s taken up the Louisiana Bayous as her stomping grounds, which already sets the character in a storied context that comes with its own culture of dark magic. Add a man called Joe Mayhem into the mix, a voodoo priest that preyed on kids to fuel his immortality, and you’ve got a story that looks to make no apologies for dropping so much punk into its voodoo.

The character first appeared in  Shadowman #13, part 1 of the Fear, Blood, and Shadows story arc. She also appeared alongside Ninjak in a story that features the Deadside, Valiant’s version of the spirit world. We then get Punk Mambo #0, by Peter Milligan and Robert Gill, which sets up a future series all of her own. Here we get a look at her persona, her origins, and what her worries are regarding the state of punk in the 21st century.  At one point in the Shadowman comics she claims Sid Vicious is her spirit guide and expresses a longing for the days where punk used to be dangerous.

Punk Mambo #1 is stated for release on April 24th, 2019. Official PR and covers follow.
