Stan Lee’s legacy lives on! The New York City Council has approved a proposal to name a Bronx street after the late Marvel icon. A section of University Avenue will be co-named “Stan Lee Way” and will be part of a bill that includes 85 other honorary street names.

Before becoming one of the most famous names in comics, Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber. He grew up in the Bronx on University Avenue between Brandt Place and West 176th Street, the very stretch of road that is under consideration for the name change. He then attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx before beginning his career in comics in 1939 when Marvel was known as Timely Comics. He is credited with helping Marvel Comics expand its reach to become the multimedia juggernaut it is today.

Lee died in November of 2018 at the age of 95 just six weeks before his 96th birthday. The writer, editor, publisher, and producer leaves behind a legendary list of some of the most famous characters in comics history including Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Hulk, X-Men, Black Panther, and the Avengers. His collaborations with artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko in the 1960s set the stage for what Marvel looks like today.

The proposal for Stan Lee Way is still awaiting Mayor Bill de Blasio’s signature at the time of this writing.
