Valiant’s Incursion is going to be dipping its feet in Dark Fantasy for the time being. In issue #2, the Eternal Warrior will be scavenging the Dead Side for a way to save the Geomancer and stop the end of the world. With Cullen Bunn and Adam Gorham’s Punk Mambo on the horizon, it looks like the Dead Side will be the go-to destination for the Valiant universe. Prime comic book real-estate.
Andy Diggle, Alex Paknadel, and Doug Braithwaite are having a blast experimenting with this story, which is as intimate as it is epic. This is not an easy task, as its ramifications could be universe-wide. With a premise that contemplates the end of everything by the hands of a world devourer, one wonders whether the extended Valiant universe will make an appearance or if it will be kept contained between those who keep the threat from becoming full-scale.
In any case, Incursion is shaping up to be another hit for the Valiant. The publisher’s approach to storytelling tries not to interrupt its main series to force sales. They don’t require tie-ins to make sense of the main title and any tie-ins that do come out are stand-alone and specific to the event. Bigger publishers should take note. Valiant has the event formula pinned down and bent to its will.
