Hot off the heels of SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout (a live-action and animated special drawing 2.2 million total viewers) and the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program Emmy nomination for the episode “Plankton Paranoia,” Nickelodeon has ordered a 13-episode 13th season of SpongeBob Squarepants, the popular kids’ animated show.

Season 13 will bring back original voice cast members Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), along with current show runners Vince Waller and Marc Ceccarelli.

The renewal news also coincides with the network’s plans for San Diego Comic-Con this week, which will feature an 1,800 square-foot booth to commemorate 20 years of the top-rated show. The goal is to bring Bikini Bottom to life on the show floor for all guests who pass through.

SpongeBob SquarePants was created by the late Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon. The show follows the underwater adventures of the title character in the city of Bikini Bottom. The show also involves a colorful band of side characters such as his best friend, the friendly yet dim starfish Patrick Star and grouchy octopus Squidward Tentacles.

In addition to a new season, the network also has a prequel installment planned, The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge. The live-action/animated film is slated for release in May 2020 from Paramount Animation. The original cast is anticipated to be part of the project.
