Paramount+ has dropped the trailer for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the new film continuation of the original animated series, revealing the movie will be released on the streaming service on Saturday, July 25.
Directed by original series storyboard artist Lauren Montgomery, and written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost from a story by creators Bryan Konietzko & Michael Dante DiMartino with Hedrick and Kenneth Lin, Aang: The Last Airbender takes place in the immediate years following the original series, with a young adult Aang, Katara, Sokka et al. uncovering another frozen airbender, Tagah (voiced by Dave Bautista).
Along with Tagah, “Aang learn of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.” Replacing the original voice cast are Eric Nam (as Aang), Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), Steven Yeun (Zuko), and Dionne Quan (Toph).
Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronnie Chieng, Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, and Peta Sergeant also join the cast as new characters, while Dee Bradley Baker reprises the roles of Appa and Momo. Ken Jeong also appears as the Cabbage Merchant, originally voiced by James Sie, and Keone Young takes over from James Garrett as the voice of Aang’s predecessor Roku.
Originally intended for release in theaters on October 9, Aang was pulled from Paramount’s schedule at the end of 2025. It was subsequently leaked online, which may’ve played a role in the sudden decision to move up the film’s release, as Montgomery previously indicated it would still arrive in October. Fans who attend this month’s San Diego Comic-Con will be able to watch the film at a screening on the evening of Friday, July 24, as well as a conversation with the cast and crew in Hall H on Thursday, July 23.
The movie marks the first release from Konietzko and DiMartino’s Avatar Studios, which was formed to oversee the Avatarverse’s expansion in 2021, and is set to be followed by two more films, as well as next year’s new series Avatar: Seven Havens. In the meantime, season two of the live-action series is streaming now on Netflix, while Dark Horse will continue to keep the Avatar train going with numerous upcoming comics, including the third and final issue of The Kyoshi Warriors on July 15.
