Dark Horse has officially announced Avatar: The Last Airbender — Enter the Blue Spirit, a graphic novel revisiting Zuko’s masked persona from the first season of the TV show. Created by the longtime Avatar comics team of writer Faith Erin Hicks, artist Peter Wartman, colorist Adele Matera, and letterer Tyler Smith, the book will reveal how the Fire Nation’s prince first created his alter-ego to engage in subterfuge against his own people.

The synopsis reads, “In the early months of Prince Zuko’s exile, he and [Uncle] Iroh discover a long-forgotten Fire Nation colony along the coast of the Earth Kingdom. But when the Fire Nation demands larger quantities of the valuable ore the village produces for the war effort, the colonists’ lives are suddenly at risk. Desperate to defend his people, even against his own homeland, Zuko becomes the Blue Spirit for the very first time.”

The Blue Spirit first appeared in the eponymous 13th episode of Avatar‘s first season in 2005, written by series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, and directed by Dave Filoni. The episode saw Zuko take on the persona to rescue Aang (the titular avatar and last airbender himself) from captivity, and was one of the first to foreshadow the villainous prince’s heroic turn. It proved memorable enough to be adapted into the infamous 2010 film, and the live-action Netflix series.

Incidentally, Zuko was reportedly set to take the lead in the next Avatar continuation movie after this summer’s Aang: The Last Airbender. Knight Edge Media claims the movie, which would’ve seen Steven Yeun reprise the role after voicing him in Aang, was scrapped after multiple behind-the-scenes issues, and Paramount wanting a more kid-friendly approach to the franchise, after seeing how dark and political its storyline (which involved the new Fire Lord investigating a pair of murders) was.

Enter the Blue Spirit will retail in paperback at 80 pages for $13.99, on February 23, 2027. Its announcement comes as the third animated series in the saga, Avatar: Seven Havens, premieres today on Paramount+. In the meantime, Brandon Hoàng and BellBessa‘s Kyoshi Warriors series will be released in trade paperback on November 10, and the Fire and Family Treasury Omnibus, collecting three prior tales of Zuko and his family (set after the show), will follow on June 1.
