Actor Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to reprise the role of Batman for the long-simmering Flash film. The Wrap reports that Keaton would play an elder Batman in the Flashpoint timeline created when The Flash (Ezra Miller) travels back in time to stop his mother’s murder.

It’s been more than thirty years since Keaton first donned the dark knight’s cowl for the first Tim Burton-directed Batman film in 1989. He would return to the role in 1992 for Batman Returns before bowing out of future sequels. He’s experienced a career resurgence in recent years after starring in 2014’s Oscar-winning Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), for which Keaton was nominated for Best Actor. In the film, Keaton played an actor haunted by a past role he’d played in a superhero movie, a nice nod to Keaton’s past as Batman. Since then he’s appeared in another comic book movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and has been teased to reprise that role as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture, in the upcoming Venom sequel.

The future of the Miller-led Flash film has been up in the air for some time. The solo film has reportedly (no pun intended) run through numerous potential directors and writers (including Grant Morrison) before finally landing on director Andy Muschietti and Birds of Prey writer Victoria Hodson. Also of note is the recent controversy surrounding Miller himself, as video surfaced in which he appeared to assault a fan. Miller was last seen as The Flash during The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, in which he met Grant Gustin‘s version of the character.

Will Michael Keaton actually return as Batman? Only time (or a large enough paycheck) will tell. At last check, The Flash is currently scheduled for release on July 1st, 2022.
