First announced at Power-Con 2019, the cult ’80s cartoon character He-Man is continuing where his adventures left off in Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation courtesy of filmmaker Kevin Smith. Less than a month after Dark Horse announced a prequel tie-in comic miniseries, today Entertainment Weekly not only released the first official images but announced a July premiere date.

“Everything I’ve ever worked on in like 27 years, this is easily in the top five of my favorite, most satisfying projects,” says Smith, a He-Man superfan who showruns Revelation and executive produces with Mattel Television’s Frederic Soulie, Adam Bonnett, Christopher Keenan, and Rob David. “When I die, they’ll be like, ‘He made Clerks, remember?’ ‘Cause that’s the most memorable thing I think I’ve ever done. I think this has a running shot at being like, ‘He made Clerks and that one cartoon that one time.'”

Revelation features an all-star voice cast that includes both Smith’s regular collaborators as well as fan-favorite established voice actors. Chris Wood, probably best known for his role as the Kryptonian Mon-El on the CW series Supergirl, voices the titular hero while Mark Hamill voices the villainous Skeletor. The rest of the cast includes Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena, Kevin Conroy as Mer-Man, the original voice of Skeletor, Alan Oppenheimer, now in the role of Moss Man, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Griffin Newman as Orco, Stephen Root as Cringer, Diedrich Bader as King Randor and Trap Jaw, Tiffany Smith as Andra, Henry Rollins as Tri-Klops, Susan Eisenberg as Sorceress, Jason Mewes as Stinkor, Phil LaMarr as He-Ro, Tony Todd as Scare Glow, Cree Summer as Priestess, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Beast Man.

Split into two parts, the five episodes of Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1 premieres this July 23 on Netflix.

  1. Kevin Smith should start working on a continuation series of She-Ra Princess of Power because the reeboot sucked like bricks big time.
