Marvel has unveiled a slate of themed variant covers for a handful of their January-shipping titles. The new variants feature alternate versions of today’s heroes as they appear in the forthcoming Marvels X series by Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, and Well-Bee. The series is a sequel to Ross and Krueger’s previous alternate universe Marvel series, Earth-X, Universe-X, and Paradise-X, a trio of 14-issue series which ran from 1999 through 2003.
Here’s a look at each of the revealed covers, along with their Diamond item codes:
CAPTAIN MARVEL #14 MARVELS X VARIANT by ALEX GARNER – NOV190880
DEADPOOL #3 MARVELS X VARIANT by DAVID YARDIN with colors by MORRY HOLLOWELL – NOV190889
DR. STRANGE #2 MARVELS X VARIANT by OLIVIER VATINE – NOV190876
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 MARVELS X VARIANT by SKAN – NOV190749
IRON MAN 2020 #1 MARVELS X VARIANT by CHRISTIAN WARD – NOV190762
SPIDER-MAN #5 MARVELS X VARIANT by JAVIER RODRIGUEZ – NOV190911
THOR #1 MARVELS X VARIANT by RYAN BROWN – AUG199023
VENOM #22 MARVELS X VARIANT by JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER – NOV190904
X-FORCE #5 MARVELS X VARIANT by GREG LAND with inks by JAY LEISTEN and colors by FRANK D’ARMATA – NOV190822
These are fine covers, and they present iconic portraits for the characters. I particularly enjoy the Captain Marvel cover for the way it evokes both Jim Starlin and Ross, and the Venom cover is also quite striking.
All of these covers appear to be open-to-order, so you should have no trouble pre-ordering them from your local comic shop. No word yet on which other January-shipping Marvel books will sport similar Marvels X variants, but we’ll be sure to share them if and when they’re revealed.
Earth X started off very strong, but by the time Paradise X came along Marvel was going to cancel the mini because of low sales. Why would they bring this back?
