When the next wave of DC original animated films were announced last July at SDCC, most assumed that the Justice League: Warworld would be part of the current shared continuity dubbed the “Tomorrowverse.” Sure enough, it looks to be the case. Today courtesy of a THR exclusive, the first image and details for the the Justice League: Warworld animated film were revealed.

Warworld features previous Tomorrowverse actors reprising DC’s Trinity which include Jensen Ackles as Batman/Officer Wayne, Stana Katic as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince and Darren Criss as Superman/Agent Kent.

Rounding out the rest of the cast includes Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter/J’onn J’onzz, Troy Baker as Jonah Hex, Matt Bomer as Old Man, Roger C. Cross as Machiste, Brett Dalton as Bat Lash, Trevor Duvall as Drifter, John DiMaggio as Lobo, Robin Atkin Downes as Mongul, Frank Grillo as Agent Faraday, Rachel Kimsey as Mariah Romanova and David Lodge as Sheriff, and Damian O’Hare as Deimos and Teddy Sears as Warlord.

Official synopsis:

Until now, the Justice League has been a loose association of superpowered individuals. But when they are swept away to Warworld, a place of unending brutal gladiatorial combat, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the others must somehow unite to form an unbeatable resistance able to lead an entire planet to freedom.

As most DC readers are well aware, Warworld and its despotic ruler Mongul were at the forefront in the recent “Warwarld Saga” storyline in the pages of Action Comics by writer Philip Kennedy Johnson. While the basic premise is similar, it’s more than likely the animated film will veer into its own direction most notably the inclusion of DC’s Wild West characters.

Justice League: Warworld comes courtesy of executive producers include Butch Lukic and Sam Register, along with longtime Batman franchise executive producer Michael Uslan. The film is directed by Jeff Wamester from a script by Jeremy Adams, Ernie Albacker & Josie Campbell. All three writers were previously involved in separate Tomorrowverse animated projects, but this is the first time all three have come together to collaborate on a script for the shared universe. The producers are Jim Krieg (The Death and Return of Superman) & Kimberly S. Moreau.
