Image Comics’ July 2019 solicitations have arrived. You can find them below, but first let’s delve into some quick analysis.

  • There are, as usual, a number of new series in Image Comics’ July 2019 solicitations. These include Reaver, Sea of Stars, Space Bandits, and Unearth.
  • Meanwhile, there are a number of endings too. Most notably, Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, and Matt Wilson are ending Paper Girls at #30. The issue, however, is extra-sized. With Saga still on hiatus, this marks the first time in years there hasn’t at least been a new BKV comic somewhere on the horizon. Although the solicits have some Saga news.
  • Other finales for long-running books include Black Science #43 and Skyward #15.
  • In addition, a pair of very different yet truly excellent miniseries will also end with Assassin Nation #5 and Little Bird #5.
  • Bitter Root, the familial monster-hunting book set during the Harlem Renaissance, gets an anthology, which, very cool.
  • While the long-underrated Postal from writers Bryan Hill and Matt Hawkins returns with new artist Raffaele Ienco. The series previous artist, Isaac Goodheart, has gone on to work for DC, drawing Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale for one of its YA imprints.
  • Other books returning with new story arcs in July include Analog, Crowded, and Ice Cream Man.
  • More series, however, will say goodbye…at least for a bit as they end current arcs. These include Farmhand, Infinite Dark, Port of Earth, The Realm, and everyone’s favorite thing, Monstress.
  • There are some really interesting collections due in July. Topping the list is the special Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips Criminal hardcover Bad Weekend, which combines Criminal #2 – #3 with additional new material, like a director’s cut.
  • Finally, it’s super weird to look over Image solicits and not see the Wicked + Divine anywhere. Right or wrong, that book is inextricably linked in my head to Image’s early 2010s creator-owned resurgence.

  1. Not sure about Space Bandits or Reaver, but sign me up for Sea of Stars by Aaron and the writer formerly known as Dennis Hopeless! And Unearth from Cullen Bunn sounds intriguing and inventive like all his series. He’s got a good eye for rising star art talent as well, so I’m definitely checking that series out. How strange is it though, that literally all 4 new series from Image are sci-fi again, one is post-apocalyptic, and 2 are space adventure. Plus don’t discount the fact that Reaver also promises the occult and dark magic. So very strange that Image is the “house of dark, twisted sci-fi” these days.

It’s not strange if you have been paying attention. The creators are all using sci fi as a setting to do political and social allegories. Jason Arron could care less about science fiction but is most likely using it as a forward-looking, progress-orientated backdrop to do who knows what.
Brandon Graham. for example, sometimes, uses sci fi as a backdrop to do smut.
