Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be at the helm of a new Star Wars movie due out in 2022. Iger made the announcement during the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit following Disney’s announcement that there will be three more Star Wars films after this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The new entries are untitled so far and details about the upcoming films are limited.
“We’re hard at work already, but we felt three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to gear up for the next film’s release,” Iger said. “We did a deal with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones and the next movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that.”
The remaining two films from this new trio are currently scheduled for 2024 and 2026. The plan is to alternate them with James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, which will start on Dec. 17, 2021.
We had already heard back in 2018 that Benioff and Weiss would write and produce a new series of Star Wars installments separate from the main Skywalker saga. Today’s announcement clarifies the plan for the franchise.
Depending on how many Star Wars fans are also Game of Thrones followers, the reaction to this news could be a mixed bag, especially considering the negative reviews this last season of the HBO juggernaut has been receiving. Will the backlash from Game of Thrones affect this new Star Wars series? Maybe by 2022, everyone will have forgiven Weiss and Benioff for the show’s final season.
