While director and animator Genndy Tartakovsky has been keeping busy by directing Adam Sandler‘s Hotel Transylvania movies — a fourth one has been threatened for 2021 — his first love has always been his own creations, i.e. the cartoons he has created and produced for Adult Swim. According to the trades, Tartakovsky’s latest venture for Adult Swim will be a half-hour prehistoric series called Primal, about “a caveman at the dawn of evolution and a dinosaur on the brink of extinction.” The friendship created between the two of them is the only way they can survive a “violent primordial world.”
Besides directing the amazing original Star Wars: Clone Wars shorts for Adult Swim, Tartakovsky created the popular Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack series for Cartoon Network, the latter airing five well-regarded seasons, the first four on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2003, the most recent on Adult Swim in 2017. (Tartakovsky spoke with The Beat at Comic-Con in advance of that last season.)
Considering how fun it’s been watching Tartakovsky play in other’s playgrounds, such as Star Wars and the retro Cage series he wrote and drew for Marvel Comics, seeing him do a movie with dinosaurs and cavemen should be just as entertaining. Knowing Genndy and considering this is for the edgier Adult Swim, this won’t be a cutesy version of a caveman and dinosaur friendship story ala Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur.
Last week, Adult Swim ordered a Harvey Birdman spin-off series starring Birdgirl.

  1. This looks cool enough that I’ll ignore the fact that dinosaurs and anything resembling modern humans would have been separated by more than 60 million years. Maybe this is one of those ‘lost world’ scenarios.
