I feel like I’ve been hearing about a television adaptation for Locke & Key for as long as I’ve been writing about film and television online. The Joe Hill written and Gabriel Rodriguez drawn series was initially going to land at Fox, with a pilot shot in 2011 that was co-produced by Steven Spielberg. It didn’t get picked up.
Then came the possible movie at Universal in 2015, and then the Hulu pilot that Lost’s Carlton Cuse and Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson produced, with IT’s Andy Muschietti behind the camera. That was also not picked up. THR had a great piece discussing the ins and outs of the difficulties that this property faced in adaptation.
Well, sometimes the third time…excuse me, fourth time…is the charm, and finally it’s Netflix who will be bringing Locke & Key to life, with the first season landing on February 7th. It almost feels like it’s not real, but here we are! And there’s a trailer too! Take a look below:
The trailer says it all, but unless you’re one of those folks who needs an elevator pitch, the premise of the series goes something like this:
“three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.”
The trailer looks quite good with a nice family adventure vibe that fills a fun niche there in the Netflix stable, and since it’s got some dynamite source material to draw from, expectations are high. Cuse is back as a producer, along with Aron Eli Coleite and
Meredith Averill, and the series stars Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jesup, Emilia Jones, Sherri Saum, Griffin Gluck and Darby Stanchfield.
As with all Netflix series, it’ll be ready for you to watch in totality in one month!
