After teasing it at San Diego Comic-Con, Dark Horse Comics have now announced its Baldur’s Gate 3 series, starring the heroes of Larian Studios’ beloved Dungeons & Dragons video game. The ongoing comic will begin with a six-issue arc starring the vampire elf Astarion, written by Alyssa Wong (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Deadpool), with art by Vincenzo Carratù (Psylocke), inks by Elisabetta D’Amico (Kill All Immortals II), colors by Valentina Taddeo (Werewolf by Night), and lettering by Buddy Beaudoin (The Flash).

The initial arc will see Astarion “enjoying his freedom after escaping the clutches of [his master] Cazador Szarr. But when Waterdeep is rocked by a spree of gruesome ritual murders, Astarion must hunt down the killer before he becomes their next victim!” It was not said if this takes place before the game (ala T. Kingfisher‘s recently released prose novel starring the character), or after it.
The second, 12-issue arc (running in #7-18) will follow tiefling barbarian Karlach as she ventures into the Nine Hells. It will be written by Becky Cloonan (Somna, Four Gathered on Christmas Eve) and illustrated by Francesco Scimonelli (Dick Tracy). More details will be revealed on that next year, although Cloonan teased the arc with some art of her own at SDCC:
Dark Horse had another D&D announcement, this time for the upcoming revival of the Dark Sun setting. A trilogy of hardcover graphic novels, simply titled Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Sun, will begin with a 56-page installment on April 20, and feature the talents of writer Dan Abnett, artist Nil Vendrell (The Witcher), colorist Mattia Iacono (Werewolf by Night), and letterer Buddy Beaudoin.

The synopsis tells us of Tikat, a Thri-kreen gladiator, who fights “for the ones he loves. So, when Tikat’s friend Wik is targeted by a powerful psionic enemy, Tikat volunteers himself as bodyguard. What follows is a brutal battle for survival as Tikat, his cannibal companion Kavora, and the rest of their reluctant party members fight to escape the city of Tyr. As the team rends their way through hordes of bloodthirsty minions, they also hunt for the identity of their faceless enemy. Can Tikat and his comrades unmask their true foe before being butchered by thrall?”
Both Dark Sun Vol. 1 and Baldur’s Gate III #1 are available to preorder now. The latter will be released on February 24, and have five covers, one of which features a blank character creator screen, while the others have art by Gerald Parel, Scott Fischer, Angela Wu, and Tyler Walpole. Dark Horse’s new, main Dungeons & Dragons series will begin in the meantime on November 4, and a preview of Baldur’s Gate III #1 will be included in issue #2, due out January 6, 2027.
