Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro subsidiary behind Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, announced at last week’s Gen Con that D&D will join MTG’s Universes Beyond initiative, introducing settings and characters from other, licensed properties. These will include Star Wars, which will join the tabletop roleplaying game during the original film’s 50th anniversary in late 2027, and World of Warcraft, which’ll receive a rulebook and miniatures on November 17, 2026.
Dan Ayoub, head of the D&D franchise, states, “With Universes Beyond, we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft. […] What’s more, in a crossover that fans have dreamed about for years, Star Wars is coming to D&D for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops. Our wide range of announcements show that we are committed to delivering more choices, and more ways for friends and family to adventure together.”
WOTC previously published the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, and other Star Wars games, from 2000 to 2010. They stopped, citing an “economic downturn,” two years before Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. Fantasy Flight Games subsequently published the Star Wars TTRPG, the rights to which were then transferred to fellow Asmodee subsidiary Edge Studio in 2020. World of Warcraft, meanwhile, received a line of TTRPGs from White Wolf (Vampire: The Masquerade) imprint Sword & Sorcery Studios from 2003 to 2008.
The Universes Beyond line was introduced for MTG in 2020, and has gone on to feature dozens of franchises, including The Walking Dead (the line’s first), Marvel, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Star Wars was presumably absent from the range because it has its own major card game, Star Wars Unlimited, courtesy of Fantasy Flight. Hasbro, the longtime holder of the action figure rights for the galaxy far far away, has licensed out the TTRPG rights to other properties (eg. Transformers) to Renegade Game Studios, who recently announced they would rerelease their games with D&D compatible rulesets.
