As revealed at the end of this week’s Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers #1, Dark Horse will launch its first ongoing Dungeons & Dragons series this November, helmed by writers Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing, artist Ibraim Roberson, inker Arabson Oliveira, colorist Dan Brown, and letterer Haley Rose-Lyon. The comic will see familiar characters like the “mad mage” Mordenkainen, the demonologist Tasha, and the explorer Volo team up to stop a dragon apocalypse from destroying Faerun.
Kelly, who teamed up with Lanzing and Alessandro Miracolo on a D&D story in this year’s Comics Giveaway Day issue, says, “This book is the very definition of a passion project for us. We’ve been roleplaying together for as long as we’ve been a writing team, which is only slightly less than we’ve been friends.” He adds, “D&D is a game that can never be ‘won’, but which can make you a better person through playing. Of course, player catharsis only comes from character pain… and sadly for our characters, we’re about to end the world.”
Lanzing says the team “are laboring to push this story as hard as we possibly can – this is the new ongoing, flagship D&D story and every issue, we’re going to fulfill that promise. This is the fantasy comic we’ve been desperate to bring into the world – not another deconstruction, but a timeless tale made with everything modern comics has to offer. Whether you’re new to the Forgotten Realms or a level 20 paladin looking for the next ground shaking fantasy epic, Dungeons & Dragons is for you.”
Additionally, during Dark Horse’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, the publisher announced another comic set in the world of Faerun: Baldur’s Gate III, details for which will be announced at a later date. Senior Dark Horse editor Spencer Cushing also announced another Magic: The Gathering series, The Mage of Zhalfir, in Total Party Killers #1’s afterword. That book, which doesn’t have a creative team attached yet, will similarly start this November, and follow time mage Teferi Akosa “through some of the most foundational stories of the Magic multiverse”.
Dungeons & Dragons #1 is available to pre-order now ahead of its release on November 4. It will be available with covers by Esad Ribić, Tyler Jacobson, Antonio José Manzanedo, Karen Darboe, Mateus Manhanini, and Eric Canete, which you can check out below. The book will also contain an afterword by actor Erika Ishii (Worlds Beyond Number), which’ll be the first of several essays or D&D game assets exclusive to the single-issue releases.
