What if the Green Lantern Corps was the universe’s last line of defense against the human race? That’s the premise of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, the newly-announced six-issue Elseworlds miniseries from DC Comics. The series comes from the creative team of writer Dan Watters, artist Kyle Hotz, colorist Dan Brown, and letterer Steve Wands.

Here’s how DC describes Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos:

For centuries, the Empire of Humanity has swept across the universe, laying siege to the cosmos planet by planet until all kneel before the might of the human race. Only the heavily militarized Green Lantern Corps dares oppose the human crusade.

And no human has ever fought for the Corps against the Empire. Until Hal Jordan.

Once a soldier fighting on behalf of humanity, Hal was betrayed by his battle-brother Oliver Queen and left for dead on an alien world. Rescued and deprogrammed by the Green Lantern Corps, Hal is now the Corps’ only human warrior and a powerful strategic weapon in its war against humankind. Hal’s blood-soaked odyssey will carry him through the burning ruins of a DC Universe unlike any readers have seen before, as Hal fights for peace by taking the battle to the shores of Hell itself.

This is a world where there is no joy and no peace to be found, only an intergalactic crusade and the few heroes still willing to stand against it. Across six issues, Watters and Hotz push the DC Universe to outrageous new extremes, reimagining familiar heroes, villains, worlds, and alliances as the war for the cosmos grows increasingly unpredictable.

The first issue of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos will sport a main cover by Hotz, as well as variant covers by Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood.

Doomed Cosmos is the latest DC work for writer Dan Watters, who, along with being the ongoing writer on Nightwing, has written books like Batman: Dark Patterns with artist Hayden Sherman and Arkham City: The Order of the World with artist DaNi. It’s the first longer work for DC from artist Kyle Hotz, who drew 2024’s Lobo Cancellation Special with writer Kyle Starks and has done a number of short stories and fill-ins on various titles over the years.

In a statement announcing the new series, Hotz described redesigning the Green Lantern Corps for a space war epic:

“Visually, I am trying to walk the line between over-the-top space opera and the emotional beats of the story,” said Kyle Hotz. “Apart from being a Green Lantern fan from when I was just a little kid, my prep for this was really spending time studying some of the best war films. I want to get the feeling across that the Lanterns are beat up, tired, and certainly the underdogs. Their armor is cracked and broken, and their weapons are held together with tape and wire. These are soldiers nearing the end of their fight.”

Below you can check out nine unlettered preview pages for Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1, featuring the armored GL Corps fighting an army that looks suspiciously like the Knights of the Order of St. Dumas, as well as a horde of Thanagarians. Look for the series to arrive in stores and digitally on Wednesday, January 20th, 2027.
