Improvised fantasy storytelling podcast Worlds Beyond Number is teaming up with Skybound to crowdfund a graphic novel adaptation, The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One – Book One. The children’s book, based on the story by cast members Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, Aabria Iyengar, and Lou Wilson, will be scripted by Jadzia Axelrod (Galaxy: The Prettiest Star), and feature art by Sarah Webb (Legends & Lattes).
Set in the world of Umora, the 240-page hardcover release will retell the story of how Suvi (the Wizard), Ame (the Witch), and Eursulon (the Wild One) met as children, “and see them thrust from the known into peril, confusion, and new worlds they will struggle to understand. This is the story of how our trio met, and the events that would bring them back together so many years later.” The project will go live on Kickstarter on Tuesday, June 16, and you can sign up to be alerted at the link.
The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One was the inaugural campaign of Worlds Beyond Number, which launched in 2023, and ran until 2025. Iyengar, Ishii, and Wilson respectively played Suvi, Ame, and Eursulon, while Mulligan served as Dungeon Master. The four said in a joint statement, “We’ve dreamed for a long time about finding the right way to bring The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One to the page, and seeing this world transformed into a graphic novel has been genuinely surreal for all of us. What began as friends telling a story together has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined, thanks entirely to the passion of our community. We’re incredibly excited to invite you back into Umora in a whole new way.”
Axelrod adds, “As a long-time RPG player and GM – as well as professionally writing a couple of modules – I was primed to become a fan of WBN from the moment it launched. I’ve been writing comics professionally for over a decade, so imagine my delight when I got a call from an editor I love working with to adapt my favorite podcast! The stars could not have aligned better. Figuring out how to tell a story with no visuals at all in a primarily visual medium was no easy task, but I relished the challenge! And I am so incredibly proud of the end result Sarah and I have made.”
Webb also shares, “The WBN team has created such a beautifully textured and moving world here, and it was a true pleasure to spend time with this story while translating it to a visual medium. This graphic novel has so many elements I love illustrating – funny, cute, and very heartfelt characters and creatures, a fairytale witch’s cottage, deep dark forests, festivals, strange monsters – but more uniquely, I think it truly has a story worth telling.”
The book will mark Ishii’s first comic book credit, while Mulligan previously wrote the webcomic Strong Female Protagonist, and Iyengar co-created the BOOM! Studios series The Fade. Wilson received a comics credit for Fantasy High, a Webtoon series based on a campaign from another podcast with Mulligan, Dimension 20.
