SDCC12: JMS Is Playing the Field — Adds Legendary To His Publisher List
Legendary continues to pick up more name creators. We already told you about Waid, Brooks and Davis. Now we hear J. Michael Straczynski has a project at Legendary:
SDCC 2012: Evil Ernie Returns In October From Dynamite
Back in the 90s, Evil Ernie was hot book for awhile. Brian Pulido and Stephen Hughes had a hot run with the Chaos! Comics imprint, which also featured Lady Death (yes, that was when Bad Girls were at their peak). Dynamite acquired most of the Chaos! intellectual property, back in 2010 (Lady Death is over at Avatar). This looks to be the first book to come out from that IP family.
SDCC 2012: Legendary Adds a Mark Waid / Max Brooks / Shane Davis Graphic...
You may recall Legendary Entertainment (best known for their film wing which does tiny films like The Hangover and Dark Knight) has a comics wing (Legendary Comics). Legendary's first comic was Frank Miller's Holy Terror. Their next announced book was by Matt Wagner and Simon Bisley. Then they announced a couple titles with Paul Pope. So you get the impression Legendary likes to deal with "name creators." That seems to be continuing.
Alex Ross Paints The Whole Comic As Dynamite Launches a Pulp Crossover Mini
Has it really been 6 years since Alex Ross painted an entire comic? He did do pencils and inks with some computerized painted finishes for a Justice Society/Kingdom Come special edition in '09. Other than that I think it really has been just a page or two here and there since Justice wrapped in '06. Ross is returning to interiors in November for a pulp character (Shadow/Green Hornet / Zoro/ Black Bat / Miss Fury / The Spider) crossover mini-series called Masks from Dynamite in November.
More DC October Creative Changes And Other Solicitation Nuggets
Sometimes you get a fuller story when the solicitations are announced, and today would be one of those times. Let's start out with another primary creative change: Dan Jurgens is taking over Firestorm:
Howard Chaykin is Reviving Buck Rogers
OK, here's another one you weren't expecting. Howard Chaykin is going to be writing and drawing a Buck Rogers series. From Hermes Press.
More DC Creator Moves: Nocenti Returns to Catwoman and Tony Daniel's Next Stop-Over
More creator change announcements at DC today. Ann Nocenti taking over Catwoman under unusual circumstances and Tony Daniels moving on to a higher profile title... for a little while.
Joe Kubert Gets an Anthology at DC
Joe Kubert continues to be pretty active over at DC. Currently inking his son, Andy, on Before Watchmen: Nite Owl, Joe's going to be having his own anthology at DC. Joe Kubert Presents is slated to have a six issue run, debuting on Halloween. Joining Kubert for the anthology are Brian Buniak and Sam Glanzman.
John Layman Taking Over Detective Comics
There's a new team on Detective Comics and it probably wasn't who you were expecting. New artist, Jason Fabok, maybe you could have seen him coming. He's filled in on a couple issues of Batman: The Dark Knight and also worked on the recent Batman Annual. You could make an argument he got a quick promotion from designated reliever (while that isn't a formal title in comics, it probably should be) to primary artist. John Layman writing Detective? No, you didn't see that one coming.
Sablik joins BOOM! as VP of Publishing and Marketing
We told you a little while ago that Filip Sablik had left Top Cow, and now it's revealed that he's joined BOOM! Studios as VP of Publishing and Marketing. CBR does his intro interview:
Tony Daniel Exiting Detective Comics
In a surprise move, Tony Daniel announced his exit from Detective Comics over on his Facebook account. Why is this so surprising? If you look at the May sales estimates, Detective Comics #9 is sitting at 96K copies. Easily over 100K if you factor in UK sales. If you ignore the Batman Annual, it's DC's #4 title. Batman, Incorporated looks to have outsold it by 470 copies in the US, so there's a decent chance it will be DC's #3 title when the July numbers come out. OK, so you do have some "Night of the Owls" boost going on right now. It's been the #5 book for DC most of the time. That's a big change on a pretty successful title.
