Jackson toying with a third Hobbit movie — just make The Akallabeth already, okay?
Deadline chats up Peter Jackson, who's mulling what to do with all his extra Hobbit footage and also dreaming of all the Middle Earth material in the appendices -- over a hundred pages of chronologies, genealogies, and linguistic notes. Deadline thinks an extra movie is a bad idea if it just stretches out Gandalf snooping around Dol Guldur and the daily doings of Dale, but we say...there's certainly a lot of material there.
Marjane Satrapi's Chicken With Plums trailer is out
Already Oscar-nominated for the PERSEPOLIS film she co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi is mostly sticking to the film medium for now. The trailer and poster for a film based on her graphic novel CHICKEN WITH PLUMS is now out. Once again co-directed by Satrapi and Paronnaud (aka Winschluss), this time, instead of animation, the duo are using live action to tell the story of a violinist in 1958 Tehran:
Dark Knight Rises to $160M Weekend Box Office; Everything Else Has Big Drop
To say this was an unusual week at the box office is putting it mildly. The shooting at the Dark Knight Rises opening in Colorado cast a pall over the entire film industry. The studios agreed to delay the box office data until Monday, a highly unusual instance of the studios cooperating. Other than Dark Knight Rises, everything was down and down a lot. Most of it over 50%. I suspect this is a combination of the massive anticipation for Dark Knight Rises (including tons of advance ticket sales) and some people not going to the movies in the wake of the shooting. Either way, Dark Knight opened with $160,887,295, which is good for the #3 opening all-time, behind Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2. There's some noise about it being the highest non-3-D movie, but I'm not sure to what extent the IMAX version does or doesn't mitigate that angle, since Nolan was emphasizing the IMAX aspects during filming.
DreamWorks buys Casper the Friendly Ghost, Little Lulu and many more classic comics licenses
A Lassie animated movie? A new Casper cartoon? It's all speculation, but DreamWorks has just purchased licensing company Classic Media for $155 million. Classic Media, which was founded by ex-Marvel CEO Eric Ellenbogen and ex-Broadway Video's John Engelman in 2000, has long been one of the biggest behind-the-scenes media entities, amassing a huge library of legacy characters including the Harvey and Western libraries, in addition to The Lone Ranger, Lassie, and many many more.
The Man of Steel Movie Trailer – A Somber Superman
If you didn't see the trailer for Man of Steel, the upcoming Zack Synder Superman film, in the previews before The Dark Knight Rises, the trailer has finally started turning up online. The trailer is bleak and somber in tone. It might be the whole film has this feel or it might be a deliberate attempt to differentiate a new project from the Richard Donner version the viewing public is familiar with (and that Bryan Singer was attempting to emulate in the last Superman film).
Weekend distraction: Biggest Crackerjack Toy Auction in history about to go down
It's been a crappy horrible day, but here's something to end it on that should make you smile. The kids today may not be aware that Cracker Jack gifts weren't always lame-of pencil toppers (seriously -- who the hell needs a pencil topper???) but were once an array of tiny toys and gadgets all assembled from die cast plastic. And now it seems largest collection of Cracker Jack toys ever assembled going up for auction. It's all part of the Dreier Collection, a massive pop culture collection which is being auctioned off by Profiles in History on July 28th. You can view the whole thing below.
