Nate Powell and Chris Ross on How They Designed ‘March’
[Editor's note: The release this week of March Book Two by Rep. John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell has already made headlines with its story of the fight for civil rights in the 60s, and the covers to both volumes have become iconic in their own right. The message of the courage to fight for equality for all in the face of violent opposition is as relevant and needed today as it was 50 years ago. But powerful images to cover powerful times don't always spring up fully formed. Here Powell and Top Shelf designer Chris Ross with an in-depth breakdown of how they created these covers and combined imagery to capture both history and ideals.]
NATE: March was originally a single, massive volume, so the initial front and back covers were intended to house the entire narrative: the front introduced the basic visual theme of opposition, with two elements facing off against each other, though a contingent of riot-ready white supremacist police were prominently featured across the bottom. After some discussion with Chris Ross, Andrew Aydin, and Congressman Lewis, we all agreed that we should shift some of that focus to the folks on the front lines, and away from Jim Crow police forces. Around that time, we decided to release the saga as a trilogy, so Chris and I jumped in to further develop the oppositional themes, but playing with different angles and approaches to the cover’s division.
Darth Vader #1 has already sold 300,000 copies
This Star Wars thing has legs! Following on the million selling Star Wars #1, Darth Vader #1, the next Marvel foray into the land of the Force, has already topped 300,00 pre-orders, Comicbook.com reports. The issue is by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Salvador Larroca, and follows what happens after Vader goes spinning into space at the end of A New Hope...but BEFORE anyone brought him his shuttle. The next new marvel Book is Princess Leia #1 and that better top 100k, kids.
IDW starts publishing Disney Comics
IDW sort of hinted at this back at NYCC, when they announced an Artists Editions of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa. At the retailer meeting, Dirk Wood said, in that special way of his, something along the lines of "There will be more coming from IDW and Disney." which at the time was a pretty clear indication there would be...more.
And so there is, and they mentioned it again in the fall but no one noticed. And now they just slyly let it out in the April Solicitations.

Review: Burning Fields Burns This Mother Down
Burning Fields is an analog combination of old school horror like The Thing in combination with the geopolitical drama of a Zero Dark Thirty. Where it plants its feet and sets itself apart is in the perpetual insecurity these pages bring and that is far from a bad thing.

Marvel Secret Wars; Don’t call it a reboot…but maybe it is
It's been the super secret plan of the Marvel staff for more than five years. It's been a glimmer in Jonathan Hickman's eye for even longer. But now, Marvel is joining the "big battle changes fictional universe forever*" trend with Secret Wars, which launches in May leaving carnage in its wake.
As announced at a press conference with Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and E-i-C Axel Alonso at Midtown Comics downtown location, as part of the eight issue Secret Wars event Secret Wars #1 and Secret Wars #2 by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, the Ultimate universe is folding into the 616 Marvel universe and "There will be only Battleworld," promised Tom Brevoort. Issue #2 will be a huge extra sized reference staking out the new world, which ties in to the teasers marvel released last fall. Various universes form popular mini series of the past from Civil War to Marvel Zombies will return.
