Well, we didn't want to have another whole link dump devoted to the New 52 but...there has been so much reaction to the Week 3 books and their various portrayals of the ladies that there was more than enough material. § For some much needed perspective, Newsarama looks back on the 10 Most Shocking Superhero Hook-ups, and it is wise to remember that 10 years ago, Luke Cage giving Jessica Jones a blast in the can was considered the End Of Comics As We Know It. Now, it's a cozy nostalgia moment.

Continue ReadingThis is a landmark day in comics -- no, not because LEGION LOST #1 is coming out. The new ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1 --featuring the new, multi racial Miles Morales -- is also on sale, making this an even bigger month than we ever thought possible. Marvel just sent out some more info on the book, including a few #0 issue on the Marvel comics app and the twitter hashtag #milesmorales. How about it? Will you be going to the store to pick this up? Here's some previews pages from Brian Michel Bendis and Sara Pichelli:

Continue ReadingCan we get a "Hell yeah?" for this weekend's Small Press Expo? As far as all the recent worrying, fretting, funding, snarking, and analyzing the numbers of women in comics goes, SPX is a model of how to do it right. As the below PR shows, they have an incredible guest list of supremely talented men AND women, and a look at the exhibitor list show's there are 120 women -- that's about 40% of the exhibitors. Gendercrunch that.

Continue ReadingOnly a year ago, Tom Bouden's gay-themed adpatation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest was fighting rejection on Apple's mobile platforms, leading to cries of a double standard where sex and violence were concerned. But now LGBT publisher Northwest Press is claiming victory by having Teleny and Camille, Glamazonia: The Uncanny Super-Tranny, and Rainy Day Recess: The Complete Steven's Comics all approved by Apple. All are now available via the iBooks app.
Continue ReadingThere have been about 42 multigabillion reactions in the media to the new multi-culti-ultimate Spider-Man, and we're not going to link to all of them, but here are the three best that have crossed our desk today. Perhaps we'll update this post if more good ones come in. • As you can see Stephen Colbert weighed in last night with some funny, funny jokes. Colbert is an avowed comics fan with many crossovers in his resume already, including having Joe Quesada on as a guest, and guesting himself in an issue of Spider-man.
Continue ReadingIn one of my rebuttals to one of the idiotic racist postings on The Beat yesterday, I Almost....ALMOST made a reference to Glenn Beck along the lines of, "Glenn Beck should start a line of comics just for all the angry white men; sales would soar." And then I thought, oh that's too knee-jerk. What was I thinking?
Continue ReadingWell, HOLY CRAP. It's all done broke loose now, hasn't it. What the hell is going on? The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together. OR should that be: men and women, blacks and whites making COMICS together. It seems like "The Diversity Issue" in comics has exploded all over the place. It can't be silenced. It can't be swept under the rug. More accurately, its ISP can't be blocked. The intersquawk just won't let these issue die. Is it just a few malcontents who won't shut up? Is it a reflection of the world we live in? Or is it just that as we enter the Digital Age of comics (and everything else) infinite accessibility means that the broadening audience for comics needs them to step up and join the real world?
Continue ReadingAll of you folks who have been crying about diversity in comics had better be all over this! Marvel has revealed that the new Ultimate Spider-Man will be Hispanic/African-American teenager Miles Morales. A USA Today story broke the news and reveals that yes, Donald Glover's campaign to play Spider-Man was an influence on writer Brian Michael Bendis, although only as an indication that previous discussions about relaunching Spider-Man as a non-white character were on the right track.
Continue ReadingIt seems that Kyrax2's lonely crusade at Comic-Con -- booed and laughed at and told to shut up -- has yielded results, as the internet has swelled one voice to thousands. Last yesterday, DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee posted a statement called, simply, We hear you:

Less than 24 hours later not only has it met its $25,000 goal...it is OVER the goal with $27,454 in pledges. In case you haven't noticed, there's been a SURGE of interest in comics, video games, books, movies and TV from females readers, nerds and geeks out there. I have already pointed out how successful female cartoonists and writers are on the bestseller charts. It would seem that everyone who has been squawking about this has spoken with in the loudest way they can -- not with Twitter, or Tumblr but the DOLLAR.
Continue ReadingThe latest round of outrage over the matter of women in comics was sparked off when DC's relaunch had only three "distaff" members. In all the talk-talk there was some along the lines of Adam P Knave's Why Aren’t There More Women in Comics? which points out the lack of a welcome mat for female creators. Knave takes pains to point out that he's talking "mainstream" comics, but this got me thinking about how obsessing about women at The Big Two is really like worrying about the number of saunas in the Kalahari.
