The partnership between Critical Role and Dark Horse Comics has already yielded some pretty solid results, from art books to collectibles to several miniseries relating the origins of the Vox Machina band. Now a new miniseries Critical Role miniseries will focus on the larger world of the series, featuring fan-favorite characters and side stories. Critical Role: The Tales of Exandria is a four-issue miniseries written by Darcy Van Poelgeest and illustrated by CritRole fan artist CoupleofKooks, in consultation with series cast member Matthew Mercer. Artist Helen Mask will provide the covers for the series.

Here’s how Dark Horse describes Critical Role: The Tales of Exandria:

Focused on side characters and stories, the first series in this line of bimonthly comics focuses on Leylas Kryn, the Bright Queen of the Kryn Dynasty. Leylas has spent multiple lives in her pursuit to assemble the Luxon. With her eternal lover Quana at her side, she will stop at nothing to use its power to bring a Golden Age to the people under her rule. When what seems to be the final piece of the Luxon appears nearby, Leylas sends Quana to collect it…with consequences that may threaten the entire Kryn Dynasty!

The Tales of Exandria is the first Critical Role-related project from Van Poelgeest, whose previous comics work includes Precious Metal and the Eisner-winning Little Bird. For CoupleofKooks (presumably not their given name, but maybe their parents are big David Bowie fans), the series is their first interior comics work, but not their first professional CritRole project. They’ve previously provided a cover for the fifth issue of the second Dark Horse Vox Machina Origins miniseries.
