2019 is truly the year of Critical Role. In the midst of a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, the creative team behind the massively popular TTRPG web series has teamed up with Dark Horse Comics for three new projects set to release this year. According to a press release, these comics, art books and more will explore the world of Exandria in new and original ways.
Starting in July, Dark Horse and Critical Role will release Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Series II. The six-issue series will be available through Dark Horse Digital and retail stores starting July 10. It continues to follow the origin stories of Vox Machina characters and “material hinted at but not fully disclosed in the live-stream” hosted by voice actor and Game Master Matthew Mercer.
Critical Role: Vox Machina Origin Series II will feature writing by Jody Houser, art by Olivia Samson, colors by MSASSYK and lettering by Ariana Maher. The first issue features cover art by Fiona Staples and all six issues will be collected in a trade paperback collection that will be released in summer 2020.
Per a press release, “familiar faces from Critical Role’s smash-hit first campaign return as their escapades in Stilben lead them towards their next adventure—and a dire threat to Grog Strongjaw, the goliath barbarian, when he goes missing in the night. Tracking him down will see the party lose one member, gain another, and reveal parts of Grog’s secret past. But first, his friends have to actually find him.”
In addition, Dark Horse and Critical Role will release a TPB collection of the Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Series I on Oct. 15, 2019. The series features writing by Mercer and Matthew Colville, with art by Olivia Samson and colors and lettering by Chris Northrop. It tells the story of how Vox Machina first met. Featuring cover art by Stjepan Šejić, the 168-page Critical Role: Vox Machine Origins Series I TPB will be available for $19.99 via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, critrole.com, and local comic shops this fall.
Last but not least, in late 2019 Dark Horse and Critical Role will release Critical Role: The Chronicles of Exandria — The Mighty Nein art collection, featuring cover art by Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio. The 200-page hardcover book “contains materials presented chronologically from the first few story arcs of the Mighty Nein campaign,” including a wide variety of illustrations from the Critical Role fan community (Critters), alongside text by cast members Liam O’Brien and Taliesin Jaffe. The collection will retail for $39.99.
