The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, Sonny Liew’s incredible history of Singapore told through an invented comics history, has become the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction. It also won Book of the Year at the Singapore Book Awards.
The accolades come as some vindication for Liew; the book was the oject of some controversy last year when Singapore’s National Arts Council withdrew a grant for the book over it’s controversial content which they claimed “potentially underminds the authority or legitimacy of the Government”.
The Beat already named the book one of the comics masterpieces of 2016. We interviewed Liew about the book here.
The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is publishede in the US by Pantheon Books, and will be published in France by Urban Comics and in Italy by BAO Publishing.
