Archer is the next show to hit COVID delays
FX’s adult animated comedy, Archer, is missing its season 11 debut “due to production challenges and scheduling issues.” Instead, the series is being tentatively pushed to later this year, rather than the planned date of May 6. Continuing on the last three seasons’ extended dream sequences, taking place in the ’30s, ‘40s and future, the next time fans see Archer will be as he wakes up from a three-year long coma. H. Jon Benjamin stars as the titular spy, and is joined by Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Adam Reed, and Lucky Yates. Look for season 11 of Archer later this year.
Tesla brings IFC and Ethan Hawke back together
IFC Films and Ethan Hawke are teaming up once again as the studio acquires U.S. rights to Tesla. The movie, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, brings Hawk together with his Hamlet collaborator, Michael Almereyda. Hawke previously worked with IFC on Boyhood as well as Blaze. With this next team up, they’ll follow the scientist’s journey building a revolutionary electrical system, his contentious relationship with Thomas Edison and his idealist clash with American industrialism, per Variety. The cast is rounded out by Kyle MacLachlan, Eve Hewson, Jim Gaffigan, Donnie Keshawarz, Rebecca Dayan, Josh Hamilton, and Lucy Walters and is set to hit theaters on August 7 of this year.
50 Cent gets another Starz drama greenlit
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson continues to grow his list of dramas with Starz as Black Mafia Family gets the greenlight. 50 Cent and Randy Huggins (Power, Prime Suspect) will EP while the latter handles writing as well. The series takes inspiration from true events, following brothers Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory as they rise against the odds and build one of the country’s most influential crime families. Per Deadline, it’s focused on “love, family and capitalism in the pursuit of the American dream,” and will delve into how the brothers’ partnership would bleed into drugs and hip hop. Previously announced at TCA, Black Mafia Family falls under a deal between Starz and 50 Cent’s G-Unit Film and Television banner.
All Rise holds a virtual session
CBS’ courtroom drama, All Rise, will produce an entirely virtual episode. Series regulars will shoot their own footage at home, which will be edited using VFX to add in appropriate backgrounds, to be complimented by a cinematographer’s footage of current Los Angeles. It’s the first of its kind to do so under the current conditions, per Variety, and will directly address the world’s current state of social isolation as Judge Benner (Marg Helgenberger) authorizes a virtual trial over a stolen car and characters experience and discuss how the quarantine affects them. Producer Greg Spottiswood says “it’s a unique chance for our ‘All Rise’ family to band together – in our different homes, even cities – to tell a story about resilience, justice and the power of community.”
Netflix’s Love 101 is a much needed slice of teen drama
So, if you didn’t watch the trailer yet and know nothing about this show, you might, like me, assume this is another of the streamer’s recent reality TV push. You’d be wrong. Love 101, coming soon to Netflix, is a Turkish teen drama dialed to a million. In this trailer, characters deal with love, anger, expulsion and adults who hate them – oh, and a referee gets kicked in the chest? It looks absolutely wild in a delightful way. This first season features 8 episodes, running between 30 and 50 minutes a piece. Love 101 is directed by Ahmet Katıksız, stars Kubilay Aka, Kaan Urgancıoğlu and Alina Boz and hits the ‘Flix on April 24.
