Award-nominated writer and editor Stephanie Cooke (Oh My Gods) announced via Twitter this week that her middle-grade graphic novel ParaNorthern has been picked up by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers. The book, featuring art by Portugal-based webcomic artist and illustrator Mari Costa (Peritale), is set to release Spring 2021.

Read the announcement from Publishers Weekly below:

Lily Kessinger at HMH has bought world rights to ParaNorthern by Stephanie Cooke (l.), illustrated by Mari Costa. In this middle-grade graphic novel, a witch named Abby and her three friends—a wolf-girl, a ghost, and a pumpkinhead—band together to try and save their supernatural town from an invasion of rabid (but adorable) chaos bunnies. Publication is planned for spring 2021; Maria Vicente at P.S. Literary Agency represented the author, and Peter Ryan at Stimola Literary Studio represented the illustrator.”

Cooke also shared the big news on her blog:

“I have been waiting for what feels like an eternity to finally be able to talk about this upcoming project of mine. It was the first story I ever really set out to really complete and make happen, and over the years it’s grown so much from what it originally was into this story that I’m so incredibly proud of. I’m beyond excited to see come into this world. Lily Kessinger at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers has acquired ParaNorthern, a middle grade graphic novel written by Stephanie Cooke (that’s me!!!!), with art by Mari Costa.”

The story follows a witch named Abby and her three friends: a wolf-girl, a ghost, and a pumpkinhead. The group must work together to save their supernatural town, North Haven, from an invasion of rabid (but adorable!) chaos bunnies.
