Justice League, DC Comics’ flagship superhero team book, will get a story arc from creators Simon Spurrier, Aaron Lopresti, and Matt Ryan starting in June.

The news broke Friday via the publisher’s monthly solicitations of forthcoming releases, with Spurrier elaborating a bit Monday morning via a blog. Spurrier noted that his stint as writer of the title will span a story arc called Rule of War, which will take place in the following three issues:

  • Justice League #48 – due June 3
  • Justice League #49 – due June 17
  • Justice League #50 – due July 1

“Expect 80ish pages of war, peace, tyranny, starborn abominations and cosmic pronouns, scattered across three issues,” Spurrier wrote in the blog.

This new run comes after a brief stint on the title by writer Robert Venditti, who came on as of Justice League #40, and during his stint collaborated with artists Doug Mahnke, Lopresti, Ryan, Barrows, and Ferreira.

Venditti, for his part, attributed his departure from the book to being offered another project (as of yet unnamed at DC) via Twitter.

The Justice League creative team switch is not the only editorial shuffling that has happened as of late within DC’s monthly superhero titles, with June also seeing a new creative team for Wonder Woman. News also broke earlier this month that Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp’s run of Green Lantern would be extended an additional four issues, which is what it was originally expected to run but that’s a another story. Speaking of other stories, these moves are all perhaps resultant from the recent departure of long-time DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio, which has thrown some major plans the publisher had for its superhero universe this fall into question. For example, the other most notable reveal in DC’s June solicits was that a new Generations one-shot that was part of a series connected to the aforementioned big plans is apparently not coming in June. That book would have been Generation Two: Age of the Metahuman, according to a press release from the publisher last month, which announced that Generation One would start a series of monthly releases. If those books are all still coming, the monthly business is now out the door.

Anyway, the solicit text for the first two Spurrier/Lopresti issues can be found below, along with the covers for the books, the first of which is by David Marquez and the second by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira.

  1. Before Infinite Crisis hit, they did rotating arcs with a core cast. Feeling deja vu again.
Where are J’onn, Kendra and others.
I don’t want to see these 5 heroes per arc. This is screaming “waiting for a relaunch…”

The League should be: Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, GL, Flash, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Mera, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Atom, Frost, Elongated Man and Martian Manhunter.
With Justice League: Global Guardians launching from Doomsday Clock, starring Booster, Beetle, Fire & Ice and international heroes rotating in and out per arc.
