We all knew Sonic the Hedgehog could move fast, but in the often snail’s pace world of publishing rights, it usually takes more than 2 days to cut a deal. (Assuming the talks didn’t begin earlier.) However, after parting ways with Archie a couple days ago, Sega just announced that IDW will be taking over the Sonic comics.

San Diego, CA (July 21, 2017) — Today SEGA® revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog™ and his friends have joined forces with IDW Publishing, the leading publisher of licensed comic books, to begin a thrilling new chapter in the Blue Blur’s adventures in 2018.
Creative teams are currently being formed, and a publishing plan is now underway with more details to come at a later date. Writers and artists will be bringing their considerable talents to the comic book world of Sonic.
“We’ve been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favorite creators and new creators alike, and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer.
“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer for Sonic the Hedgehog. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends, and foes.”

Now if only they could bring back the Mega Man comics.
Though Udon is going to publish Megamix in color starting next year so it’s not all bad.
So, will they start all over again, or will they at least finish off the current Archie stories? Will they even use the other characters in the comic universe or not?

Why would you assume that?
The last Archie issue came out months ago. Do you really think it’s a coincidence that Sega didn’t comment on the situation until just before announcing the new licensee, during Comic Con?
