DC Studios has released the second trailer for Lanterns, the Green Lantern series premiering on HBO this August.
Unlike the show’s controversial first trailer, which emphasized the grittier, more adult (TV-MA) direction of the series to the point it had almost no effects shots, this trailer puts in the green in Green Lantern, with Kyle Chandler‘s Hal Jordan being shown using his power ring to generate forcefields, and even a counterfeit dollar bill. While his version of Jordan eschews wearing his Green Lantern uniform on Earth, we see him donning it while going to space, and meeting his incarcerated mentor Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen, seen only from behind).
Speaking of prisons, Nathan Fillion‘s Guy Gardner makes an appearance visiting someone behind bars on Earth. We also see more of Jordan and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre)’s respective time in the Air Force and Marines, as well as John watching Jordan on TV as a child. The trailer ends with the reveal of Laura Linney‘s mysterious character encouraging John to claim the mantle of Green Lantern: our guess is that the Emmy Award-winning actress is playing a disguised member of the alien leaders of the Lanterns, the Guardians of the Universe.
As disclosed in an Entertainment Weekly interview with series showrunner Chris Mundy last week, the show will feature two different main time periods, respectively unfolding in 2016 and 2026. While the rural murder mystery involving Kelly Macdonald‘s Sheriff Kerry is the focus of the former, most of the new footage will undoubtedly fuel fan speculation about when each scene is taking place.
Lanterns, which will consist of eight episodes, will premiere on Sunday, August 16, and be available to stream on HBO Max. It will arrive in-between both of DC’s theatrical releases this year, Supergirl (out June 26), and Clayface (October 23). Pierre and Fillion will also return in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, now rolling cameras for a release on July 9, 2027.
