I”ve still to be convinced that Captain America (TFA, etc, etc) will actually be good, but darn if that isn’t the Red Skull.

Notice the Hydra emblem on shoulder and belt…rather than the rusty old sawbone of Adolph’s flag…another set up for the Avengers larger plotline.
Q for those who know–is the X Men franchise controlled by Marvel or is that with another Studio? Seems like the Avengers crossover plan is much more coherent than the flurry of X Men films have proven to have been so far.
I just read a report at /film that the avengers plot will revolve around loki returning as the villian.
I’m thinking the Hydra emblem might be the studio trying to play down the nazi angle? I dunno, I’m not current with the Marvel Universe.

I like the mask as well although I think actors like Weaving, Perlman, Stamos and Cummings must be insane to sit for 5 hours a day for make-up before the day’s shoot. At least he’s not CGI like Gollum.
The Skull’s premise sounds a lot like the way Destro was handled in GI Joe the film.

He looks pretty bad ass.
It looks good but it’s right around the eyes that scream “makeup”. That hard edge line transitioning into the actor’s face and eye with makeup does break the over all look. It’s like Skeletor’s makeup in the He-Man movie. It doesn’t make it bad, it just doesn’t quite have the expected look which would be a smooth edge that tappers straight into his face so it isn’t such a hard break line.
CAn I just say that since the Red Skull is no longer a Nazi but a member of HYDRA instead I am now free to lust after his jacket?
Re: Red Skull’s face . . . it doesn’t bother me so much. Most superhero film production photos don’t look so great. Every Batman promo still has looked terrible, for example, but they generally play well on film.
Whaddaya mean revealed? He was in the Super Bowl commercial. I had a screen grab of him weeks ago.
I would NOT want to mess with that dude.

Also for those wondering about the Avengers tie in, after Joss Whedon became director/writer of Avengers, he ended up giving the Captain America script a re-write before they started filming. I wouldn’t be surprised if the tie in is so tight that the last frame of the Captain America is the opening shot of the Avengers.

Except that HYDRA is apparently being positioned as a group within the Nazis. So, he’s both a Nazi AND a member of HYDRA. There was a story about this in the last week somewhere.

While licensing Nazis would surely be an issue, I expect a equally important influence on the positioning of HYDRA is for the larger franchise. HYDRA can exist as an entity in further Cap (or SHIELD) films set in modern times.
In the new Avengers cartoon which ties into the recent Iron Man and Hulk movies, WWII seems to have been fought against Hydra and the Red Skull. No Hitler OR Nazis, apparently. I’m sure it has to do with licensing (and maybe S&P), but having Hydra stand-in for Nazis in the Marvel Universe seems like a good solution.
