Ten Speed Graphic has revealed Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One, an adaptation of the first entry in the best-selling Empyrean series, written by the author Rebecca Yarros herself, with art by newcomer Anabel Rossi. Due out in hardcover and paperback on April 6, 2027, the adult-aimed fantasy fantasy will retell the story of Violet Sorrengail, who is ordered by her mother (a high-ranking general) to enlist in the ranks of the kingdom of Navarre’s dragon riders.
The synopsis says, “When you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away… because dragons don’t bond to ‘fragile’ humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter, like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda ― because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.”
The original Fourth Wing was published in 2023, and is the first in a planned five-part series, which currently includes Iron Flame (2023), Onyx Storm (2025), and the short story collection Threshing Day (releasing September 29). Two-part graphic novels of each of the three main books are currently planned, with details on Fourth Wing‘s second volume set to follow later. A Prime Video series, executive produced by Michael B. Jordan, Lisa Joy, and Jonathan Nolan is also in the works after being greenlit earlier this year.
The press release also provides more details on artist Anabel Mayet Rossi, 26, who is making her English language debut with the book. Rossi is from Italy, and a member of the Turin-based Arancia Studio (where Mirka Andolfo serves as art director). Her previous work includes the Franco-Belgian biography Amy Winehouse, and Glénat’s fantasy series Les Licorniers (created with Victor Dixen), the second volume of which won the Grand Prix des Lecteurs du Journal de Mickey in 2025.
The book will retail at 256 pages in paperback for $26, and hardback for $36, and is available to pre-order now. It will be available with a range of editions exclusive to Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, BAM! (Books-A-Million) & Indigo, featuring unique covers or bookmarks, as well as in a deluxe signed edition, containing an art print of (spoilers) Violet and Xaden’s first kiss.
