Of this year’s superhero crop, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 did its expected big business, and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks to be helping that franchise find its big money ways again, Wonder Woman has proven perhaps to be 2017’s most valuable player in the genre. Not only surpassing the domestic gross of all other DCEU films, but also becoming their first critical smash since the Nolan days.
A sequel was inevitable of course, but with the period setting of the first film, there was an open question of whether the next entry would jump to present day post-Justice League, or perhaps fill us in on what Diana was doing during the second World War or some other moment of historic importance within the confines of the 20th century.
According to The Wrap and ScreenCrush, it looks like the next time we see Wonder Woman solo, it’ll be in the era big hair, snap bracelets, and electronic drums as according to their reports: Wonder Woman 2 will be set in the 1980’s and will find Diana squaring off against the Soviet Union.
Geoff Johns and Patty Jenkins are currently working together on the script, and the latter is in negotiations for her inevitable return, after what’s sure to be a hefty payday.
WB still has an option for Chris Pine to return as well, which I really hope the trigger gets pulled on. He and Gal Gadot had a chemistry that really couldn’t be beat, and I don’t care what sort of narrative gymnastics they’d have to undergo to bring him back…give me more! Maybe he’ll pull a Lyle Waggoner and be a descendant of Steve Trevor’s that looks exactly like him. It’s all part of the legacy now!
I’m sure we’ll see quite the well-deserved victory lap next week for Jenkins and company in San Diego’s Hall H. Maybe we’ll even get a release date or even a sequel title. Watch this space!
