Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers has a main character, and her name is Kamala Khan. That’s right, Ms. Marvel will take it upon herself to bring the Avengers back together again after Captain America’s death (which — we’re 100 percent he will be back, or is not dead, or [insert Infinity Stone or magical resuscitation spell]).
The news was revealed at New York Comic Con along with a trailer that shows Kamala Khan’s Inhuman abilities getting activated after the disastrous A-Day events that kick off the game. Khan’s story arc seems to deal with the character coming to terms with her abilities, learning about her polymorphic powers and then using them in combat.
Kamala Khan’s gameplay footage show her stretchy powers in full display, along with her ‘embiggen’ power revealed as a special ability. The trailer is all about discovery. Khan has somehow obtained a flash drive containing AIM data that points to the villainous organization setting up the Avengers as the ones responsible for A-Day.
The overall feel of the footage, though, is about stepping up to the plate in the face of hopelessness. Expect a meaty character arc focused on Khan becoming Ms. Marvel, going from concerned citizen to Avengers-level superhero.
Precisely just how Square Enix will fit all their superheroes’ playstyles in a shared world is still mostly speculation. The first gameplay trailer went for individual character segments and they have a God of War/Batman: Arkham Knight feel to it, so the multiplayer aspect is still a mystery. There’s been talk of it feeling more like Destiny once it opens up for shared universe missions.
With Ms. Marvel getting her own Disney + series and the character’s already iconic status, in addition to also being a political and cultural symbol, Square Enix’s decision to make Kamala Khan the main character was gutsy. And it looks Square Enix is taking great care for her to be amazing to play with.
Marvel’s Avengers will be released May 15, 2020 for Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. Here’s a behind the scenes look at the character’s inclusion in the game.
