INFINITY remained the main feature of Marvel’s October schedule. Meanwhile, the X-Men continued their own “Battle of the Atom” crossover, and the Ultimate imprint marches stoically towards “Cataclysm”. As usual, the next wave of new launches will come after the event, so there’s not much in the way of new titles – but we do have the return of the Marvel Knights imprint, and the all-ages line gets a refresh.
It’s an unusually close month between Marvel and DC, with Marvel having the edge in unit share by a mere 33.6% to 33.2%, while DC lead in dollar terms by 31% to 30%.
Thanks as always to ICV2.com for permission to use these figures.

Holding up pretty nicely, now that the second issue drop is out of the way. We’re still above the 100K mark with one issue to go; Marvel ought to be happy with this.

These two issues both have variant covers, but even so, the book appears to be on an upswing again, after dipping to 78K in August. Issue #19 is the final part of the “Necessary Evil” storyline, and both these issues were pushed as featuring major plot developments for the title.
And now, virtually an entire crossover bunched together…

The second month of the “Battle of the Atom” crossover runs through ALL-NEW X-MEN, UNCANNY X-MEN, X-MEN and WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, plus the concluding chapter in X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM. The storyline has certainly helped sales, but it’s very striking to see all the books clustered together except for WATX – which is at number 25 with orders of 57K. That’s quite bizarre considering that this is an old-style crossover where you need all the issues to get the story.

These two issues are both INFINITY tie-ins, not that it seems to make a huge amount of difference. Presumably retailers figure that if you’re the sort of person willing to buy the other Jonathan Hickman titles to get the full INFINITY core story, you were most likely reading his AVENGERS already.
19,20. Two issues this month, though one of them has slipped from September. Issue #7 is part of Angela’s introduction and came with a raft of variant covers. Issue #8 is an INFINITY tie-in, and comes with fewer variant covers (though still several). Angela would seem to be the bigger draw here.
22. Another INFINITY tie-in. NEW AVENGERS, which lagged some way behind its sister title despite being notionally equal, seems to be gaining rather more from participating in the crossover.

Back to normal after last month’s variant-fuelled spike. Leave that one aside and the book still seems to be shedding sales faster than you might like, but it’s got plenty of margin to play with.
25. WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN 10/11 Wolverine/X-Men #1 - 99,611 ===== 10/12 Wolverine/X-Men #18 - 52,331 ( -4.4%) 10/12 Wolverine/X-Men #19 - 50,008 ( -4.4%) 11/12 Wolverine/X-Men #20 - 48,432 ( -3.2%) 11/12 Wolverine/X-Men #21 - 48,244 ( -0.4%) 12/12 Wolverine/X-Men #22 - 45,658 ( -5.4%) 01/13 Wolverine/X-Men #23 - 43,963 ( -3.7%) 01/13 Wolverine/X-Men #24 - 44,716 ( +1.7%) 02/13 Wolverine/X-Men #25 - 45,057 ( +0.8%) 03/13 Wolverine/X-Men #26 - 42,019 ( -6.7%) 03/13 Wolverine/X-Men #27 - 41,960 ( -0.1%) 04/13 Wolv & X-Men #27AU - 47,055 (+12.1%) 04/13 Wolverine/X-Men #28 - 42,718 ( -9.2%) 05/13 Wolverine/X-Men #29 - 40,451 ( -5.3%) 05/13 Wolverine/X-Men #30 - 40,019 ( -1.1%) 06/13 Wolverine/X-Men #31 - 41,661 ( +4.1%) 06/13 Wolverine/X-Men #32 - 39,790 ( -4.5%) 07/13 Wolverine/X-Men #33 - 42,269 ( +6.2%) 08/13 Wolverine/X-Men #34 - 38,473 ( -9.0%) 08/13 Wolverine/X-Men #35 - 38,046 ( -1.1%) 09/13 Wolverine/X-Men #36 - 59,684 (+56.9%) 10/13 Wolverine/X-Men #37 - 57,434 ( -3.8%) 6 mnth (+34.4%) 1 year ( +9.8%) 2 year (-42.3%)
A “Battle of the Atom” tie-in, as previously mentioned. Cancelled with issue #42, though a relaunch would hardly be surprising. While it lags some way behind the other X-Men titles, it’s nowhere near Marvel’s danger zone.
27,39,44. ARMS OF THE OCTOPUS 10/13 All-New X-Men - 56,925 10/13 Hulk - 42,970 10/13 Superior Team-Up - 40,796
A somewhat random crossover between three annuals (or rather, “Specials”). It’s actually pretty decent.
29. MIGHTY AVENGERS 09/13 Mighty Avengers v2 #1 - 101,921 10/13 Mighty Avengers v2 #2 - 54,862 (-46.2%)
That’s a steep drop, even allowing for the additional variant covers on issue #1. These are both INFINITY tie-ins, and there’s an “Inhumanity” tie-in to follow, so Marvel are certainly throwing the storyline promotions at this book in the early going.
34. DEADPOOL 10/08 Deadpool v3 #3 - 61,833 10/09 Deadpool v3 #16 - 46,288 10/10 Deadpool v3 #28 - 34,828 10/11 Deadpool v3 #44 - 26,678 ===== 10/12 Deadpool v3 #62 - 28,897 ( +1.9%) 10/12 Deadpool v3 #63 - 29,049 ( +0.5%) 11/12 Deadpool v4 #1 - 127,977 (+340.6%) 11/12 Deadpool v4 #2 - 76,445 ( -40.3%) 12/12 Deadpool v4 #3 - 64,591 ( -15.5%) 01/13 Deadpool v4 #4 - 57,061 ( -11.7%) 02/13 Deadpool v4 #5 - 57,312 ( +0.4%) 03/13 Deadpool v4 #6 - 57,095 ( -0.4%) 04/13 Deadpool v4 #7 - 57,016 ( -0.1%) 04/13 Deadpool v4 #8 - 52,851 ( -7.3%) 05/13 Deadpool v4 #9 - 51,296 ( -2.9%) 05/13 Deadpool v4 #10 - 50,461 ( -1.6%) 06/13 Deadpool v4 #11 - 54,110 ( +7.2%) 06/13 Deadpool v4 #12 - 48,315 ( -10.7%) 07/13 Deadpool v4 #13 - 47,006 ( -2.7%) 08/13 Deadpool v4 #14 - 45,870 ( -2.4%) 08/13 Deadpool v4 #15 - 46,169 ( +0.7%) 09/13 Deadpool v4 #16 - 45,675 ( -1.1%) 09/13 Deadpool v4 #17 - 45,348 ( -0.7%) 10/13 Deadpool v4 #18 - 47,096 ( +3.9%) 6 mnth ( -10.9%) 1 year ( +63.0%) 2 year ( +76.5%) 3 year ( +29.5%) 4 year ( +1.7%) 5 year ( -23.8%)
There’s a variant cover on this issue, but it’s still very impressive how steadily the book has been selling.

Issues #13 and #14 both had multiple covers, which explains their slight increase. The underlying trend looks to be the more familiar gentle decline that most titles settle into.

Not holding up quite as well as I might have expected, but then the movie promotion is some way behind us now. It’s still doing very well for a creator-owned title.

Two issues this month, including the final part of “The Secret Origin of Tony Stark”, which has multiple variants. (Including a “Classified Baby Variant” by Greg Land and David Marquez. Really, that’s a thing.) It certainly gives the final chapter a nice spike.

57. MARVEL KNIGHTS: SPIDER-MAN 10/13 MK Spider-Man v2 #1 of 5 - 38,379
The first of several miniseries reviving the Marvel Knights imprint, with indie creators doing their take on Marvel characters. This is by Matt Kindt and Marco Rudy. Not a bad number to start with – certainly enough to justify a five issue mini.

Another book double shipping in order to get back on schedule. This is the title with rotating creative teams, and it’s not exactly holding on to its audience very well. It drops down below the core WOLVERINE title this month, with its second issue.

Ends with issue #36, with the creative team moving to a digital title. I’d be pretty astonished if we didn’t get a relaunch of the print book, though – Daredevil is one of those properties that will only get cancelled if the Marvel offices are flattened by a meteor.

Relaunching in February with a fresh issue #1 and the same writer. That’ll be the second WOLVERINE relaunch inside a year, which frankly looks like panic, particularly when they don’t have a new creative team coming aboard. There’s no denying that the title is losing readers. That said, the fact that they’re changing the numbering rather than the creators could be seen as a vote of confidence in the content.

This miniseries was originally announced as ASTONISHING CAPTAIN AMERICA in 2010, and artist Adi Granov got as far as completing the first issue before moving on. Now they’ve got Agustin Alessio to complete the thing, so they’re belatedly recouping some of the cost.

And two all-ages books to round us off. MARVEL UNIVERSE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #19 didn’t make the top 300 – hardly surprising, as the cut-off point this month was 6,491, and MUUS-M was doing less than that even in the days when it did make the chart.

I’ve lost count of how many titles feature Wolverine in it, these days…
Wolverine, wolverinr max, savage wolverine, wolverine and xmen, uncanny avengers, all-new x-men, amazing x-men
What about Uncanny Wolverine, All-New Wolverine. Amazing Wolverine, Superior Wolverine, Indestructible Wolverine, New Wolverine, Mighty Wolverine, Captain Wolverine, Iron Wolverine, Fantastic Wolverine, Secret Wolverine, Wolverine Assemble, Young Wolverine, Scarlet Wolverine, Wolverine Arena, Astonishing Wolverine, Fearless Wolverine, Wolverine of the Galaxy, and Ultimate Wolverine?
What about those?!?
This article must’ve been held a bit since there’s no acknowledgment of the DD and Wolverine/X-Men relaunches.
It’s too bad about Superior Foes of Spider-Man. It’s a fun read and sits with DD and Hawkguy as the only Marvel titles I’m interested in.
It’s interesting that Marvel has jettisoned any attempt to have consistent numbering for their titles. Everything has been relaunched multiple times in just the past few years, with a new round coming up. This has kind of eliminated a “these stories don’t count” mentality as most of the current MU is doing their own thing anyways. I have not been reading Marvel prior to Infinity but I did like the fact that I could jump in for the story and leave just as abruptly.
I’m looking forward to the round of NOW books to check out the digital collections.
I really like Superior Foes of Spider-Man too but plot-wise it’s a little slow and I think that’s usually a mistake for a superhero book’s first few issues. I hope it starts to level out soon but it doesn’t look promising.
I really would suggesting deleting the comment about Amazing X-Men being a relaunch of Astonishing. If anything, it’s an extension of Wolverine and the X-Men, considering it shares the same writer, cast, setting, and launches with an arc that was teased in Wolverine and the X-Men.
Marvel seems to have got themselves into a corner, it feels like, by relaunching books that are currently selling low, in the belief that a new number one will get that sales spike. It’s almost like being addicted to a drug they can’t get off.
The sad thing is – the relaunches of relaunches don’t seem to work. Look at Captain America’s numbers or Iron Man’s. They’re at the same numbers now as their previous volumes
It also always surprises me that Deadpool outsells Cap and Iron Man.
They screwed the pooch by relaunching the Remender’s successful Uncanny X-Force as two mediocre X-Force titles, and wrapping them into a single new relaunch won’t save the dying franchise.
“these stories don’t count” – yes they do.
The relaunch of Iron man is cool
Looks like Marvel have finally milked Wolverine to death. although his current ongoings are not very good which hopefully has something to do with it, and not just lack of interest in the character.
It’s a bit late for the title, but one of the best done-in-one issues this year was Astonishing X-Men #67.

Also, X-Men: Legacy is nicely self-contained from the rest of the newnowMU and tells a good tale.
@Rich H – actually, the relaunches do work, in a way. The initial issues of the relaunch generally have higher sales for a while. If they don’t do the relaunch, they don’t get those higher sales at all.
But yes, it’s not really a sustainable system. Or do they just go with “seasons” of 9-12 issues and be done with it?
But that’s only because comics shops do the initial buying. Unless a shop orders only to fill actual pre-release requests for a particular issue, orders for a new #1 will generally be higher if only because that issue is promoted in a way that subsequent issues aren’t. Expectations that sales of a series will decline have become self-fulfilling prophecies, mainly because the publishers don’t use targeted marketing tactics to boost sales of individual issues. If the reason is that the marketing expenses would wipe out any potential profits from the sales boosts, that’s an argument for discontinuing the publication of floppies.
SRS
Thanks for this!
I was wondering what the reason for so many relaunches was. Now I know! Anyone in charge at Marvel who sees trends like these and DOESN’T relaunch is crazy. To get sometimes double your sales just by resetting the numbering to 1 seems like too tempting an offer to pass up.
I’m sick of relaunches.
SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN has increased in price to 3.99 with the latest solicit :(
Daredevil and X-Force are being relaunched at 3.99 titles instead of 2.99 – both with the same writer.
Plus 2.99 Young Avengers is ending.
There goes my Marvel pull list! Make mine anyone but Marvel!
@James:
Me too. Those increases add up quickly when buying multiple books every week.
@James:
X-Force is being relaunched by the super awesome Si Spurrier. I’ll happily pay extra to see what he does with Cable.
Just over a year after trying many of the initial now relaunches I am down to the Indesrtrcutable Hulk. The GotG relaunch is barly holding on. I do have the new X-Factor as a potential but otherwise almost everything Marvel puts out has reached bottom basement for me. DC isn’t doing much better with their books either.
“Third part of an INFINITY tie-in. This book now appears to exist almost entirely to participate in crossovers, with “Age of Ultron” in #14-15, “Enemy Within” in #16-17, “Infinity” in #18-20, and “Inhumanity” in #22-23.”
While true, it’s a little better than that, as most of those were written by the same writer, one evn tying into her other book Captain Marvel, and showing a growing ability to keep the comic tone going despite the crossover pressures. Unlike on Secret Avengers, where I skipped the issues relating to a crossover I wasn’t reading, but am now back to finish the interrupted story.
