It was another Marvel-centric month for Diamond comics sales in November, unsurprisingly. Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s Amazing Spider-Man #49, was the best-selling periodical while Alex De Campi and Erica Henderson’s Dracula Motherf—ker from Image Comics was the best-selling graphic novel.
Marvel had all the top ten titles by units, while IDW’s TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE LAST RONIN #1 and Image’s Spawn #311 charted by dollars.
According to Diamond the bestsellers from other publishers were Dynamite Entertainment’s DIE!namite #1 by Declan Shalvey, Fred Van Lente, Vincenzo Carratu, and Justin Mason at #23; BOOM! Studios’ Something is Killing the Children #11 by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera at #29; and Dark Horse Comics’ Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology #1 by P. Craig Russell, Mike Mignola, and Jerry Ordway at #56.
“As we move into the fourth quarter, Diamond continues to be encouraged by the sales trends we’re seeing,” said Tim Lenaghan, Chief Purchasing officer of Geppi Family Enterprises in a statement of gladdened tidings. “Over the course of the last three months we’ve seen a lot of stabilization in ordering patterns and, in many cases, these baseline numbers have exceeded our expectations. Additionally, there’s a tremendous amount of variety in the marketplace at the moment, and we continue to see this exhibited in our lists of Top Sellers each month.”
According to Comichron, which uses its own estimates, although the number is down from a year ago, a year ago was the fourth biggest month of the ‘Teens. Comichron’s John Jackson Miller further states:
While the 5.1 million figure is off from the number of comics Diamond shipped in October 2019 once DC is removed, it’s actually a pretty good number considering: that month was the fourth best of its decade saleswise, benefiting from one more shipping week and a bloated release schedule. October 2020’s performance was based on only 324 new comics, as opposed to 407 non-DC releases then.
Comichron further projects Diamond’s overall print sales were on the order of $37 million at full retail, graphic novels included; the same month in 2019 saw non-DC sales of $38.5 million — again, in a month that had 26% more new comic-book releases. Diamond has yet to resume releasing its Comparative Sales Statistics feature, so note that these are Comichron’s projections — but the method used to derive them has been tested and across multiple years and is believed to be both valid and reliable. We fully expect the return of official percentage change charts once more volume is back into the system.
Diamond did give publisher shares, and while Marvel has more than half of the market, It’s nice to see Vault Comics hanging in the Top Ten publishers, and Random House getting in there as well. AWA had a top ten collection with The Resistance — a surprising feat for a newish publisher.
