Yesterday, Nintendo debuted the 2nd trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie during a special Movie Direct, showing off a lot more of the Mushroom Kingdom and the Mario cast.  It features the first look at Illumination Studio’s take on Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogan), Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy), and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day.) Now that we’ve had time to get used to (if not necesaarily comfortable with) Chris Pratt voicing Mario, this trailer is a lot easier to enjoy on its merits.

The Mario trailer is packed with references to the video games. On my first watch I spotted Peach’s castle, an obstacle course reminiscent of levels of Super Mario Bros., vehicles straight out of Mario Kart, plus creatures including Cheep Cheeps and Yoshis and power-ups like the Tanooki Suit and Fire Flower.

The filmmakers are clearly putting a lot of effort into servicing fans of the games as they prepare to bring the Mario cast to the big screen. Nintendo’s mini-direct included an introduction from Mario creator Shigero Miyamoto and CEO of Illumination Chris Meledandri, with cameos by Rogan and Taylor. You can watch that here. If you just want the trailer, you can view that below.
